Chapter 22: Close Call

Virgil's P.O.V

"Come on," I mutter as I notice the infected getting closer. Logan reloads his rifle quickly and kills the four closest infected. 

"Roman, is it full yet?" I ask my boyfriend. He climbs into the passenger side and turns on the ignition. He looks at the gauges. 

"Yeah," he says after a minute. I pull out the pump and put it back. 

"Let's get the hell out of her- Ahh!" I exclaim when something pushes me down. I turn just in time to hold back an infected. "Behind us!" I yell. 

Roman climbs out of the Hummer and smashes the head of the infected on top of me with his bat. I turn my head so nothing gets in my mouth. He helps me up. 

"Let's go!" Roman yells. Logan fires off two more shots and climbs into the back with Patton. I try to run around to the drivers side but am faced with three infected. 

"Logan go! Pick me up at the grocery store!" I yell. "Come on you fuckers!" I add as I try to get all the infected's attention. They turn towards me and when I have all their attention I make a break for it. I turn every few meters to make sure they're still following me. I see the Hummer pull away and go around, likely taking the long way towards the store.

When I'm sure my friends are safe I run back towards the store. I turn around when I'm halfway there. I have to kill two runners that are getting too close with my M9. Then I run the rest of the way to the store. I let out a breath of relief when I see the Hummer parked at the end of the parking lot. When I get close I notice Logan and Roman in the front. So I climb in the back with Patton. 

"Oh thank the gods!" Patton says as he pulls me into a side hug. 

"I'm fine," I tell them. Roman turns in his seat and looks me over. 

"I'm fine," I repeat as I catch my breath. 

Logan looks pissed as he drives back to the farm. When we get there we climb out. 

"You!" Roman angrily says as he marches up to Janus. Janus tries to step back but he backs into the SUV. Roman grabs him by his collar and pulls him close. His shotgun is hanging on his back. "I should kill you," Roman tells him darkly. He lifts his fist to hit him.

Logan's P.O.V

"Roman don't!" Virgil says as he pulls Roman back. Janus scoffs and takes a step forward. 

"Bring it on," Janus says cockily. Virgil shuts him up by drawing his M9 and pointing it directly at Janus. 

"Take one more step and I'll kill you," Virgil says and I can tell he means it. 

"What the hell is going on out here?!" Aaron yells as he walks outside. He sees Virgil and walks up to him. 

"Virgil. Put it down," Aaron says in a calm, steady tone. I watch Virgil swallow back his emotion and put down the gun. He puts it behind his back. 

"Someone tell me what the hell is going on here?" Aaron asks. Before I can open my mouth Roman says something first. 

"He almost got Virgil killed!" he yells and steps forward. Again Virgil pulls him back. 

"What? What happened?" Aaron asks. I calmly tell him what happened at the gas station. Aaron looks at Janus. 

"I didn't know the sound attracted them," Janus says.

"He's right," Caden says. 

"None of us knew that. We've always avoided the dead," he adds. 

"Okay what about almost assaulting Virgil. What's your excuse for that?" I ask Janus.
