Virgil's P.O.V
Before I know it a couple months pass by. I'm outside getting some more target practice in with my aunt's bow and arrow since we're conserving our ammo. When I asked why she had it she said she just liked it. She wanted to pick it up as a hobby but never got down to it.
"You're getting pretty good with that," Logan says when I shoot down yet another can.
"It's not a moving target," I say in return.
He's sitting outside with me, cleaning his sniper rifle. My aunt officially gave it to him since it's 'the end of the world' as she put it. That and she admitted he shot better with it than she ever did.
We've pretty much gotten used to living here at the farm. Although the water and electricity were cut out last month. Luckily my aunt has a water pump on the property next to the barn so we can still kind of clean ourselves.
"Boys!" my dad calls out. I look towards his voice and see him walking towards us. "We've all been talking and we agree we should head into town," he says.
"Why?" I ask.
"There are 11 of us here. We're going through the food and water fast. We need to stock up before we get low. Hopefully most of the population is either infected or gone," he explains.
"Logan and I will go," I say and Logan nods in agreement.
"Take Roman and Patton with you. They can help," my dad says. Logan and I share a look.
"I know you're worried about them but as long as you stick together you'll be fine," my dad continues. We both sigh but agree nonetheless. "There's one more thing I want you to do," my dad says, "I want you to find a safe place to observe the infected. My friend in the army hasn't gotten back to me so we know nothing else about them other than they're dead."
Again we nod and stand up.
"We'll head out now," Logan says. I follow him back to the house where our boyfriends are.
We each grab our backpacks. Logan's has a notebook and mechanical pencil in it to take notes. The four of us climb into the Hummer. Me with my M9, Logan with his sniper rifle and all four of us with our baseball bats.
We drive the 20 minutes to the town. As we approach it we notice that we don't really see anyone. We make it to the store parking lot. It looks like there are a few infected in the distance but they are too far away. I want to say I hope it all goes this easy but I don't want to jinx it. We park the Hummer right in front of the store doors so we can get out quickly if need be. We get out and head in through the double doors.
I ready my M9 but then I realize we should try to be quiet so as not to attract unwanted attention.
"Let's do this quietly," I say just loud enough they can hear me. Logan nods and puts the sniper rifle on his back. We ready our bats.
"Patton. Grab a cart. We'll make two trips if need be. One for food and one for water," Logan says and I agree. The three of us will protect Patton. We make our way through the store as quietly as we can.
We get to the water and find three cases left. One of them is open with a few missing. Patton puts them all in the cart. Since there's still plenty of room we go to the can food aisle. Patton grabs everything that he thinks people will eat. When the cart is full we take it back to the Hummer. We end up making three trips. Gathering as much food as we can. The third trip was purely a selfish one because we were all craving some junk food before it goes bad or is looted. I practically fill my backpack with sweets. Although Logan does insist we get some healthy snacks as well. Roman and Logan wander off for a minute when Logan says he needs to use the restroom.
