Fifty-Nine

Steve's POV

I watch as Bucky silently cries on the floor, the team looks on with sad eyes. Both (Y/N) and Bucky have suffered so much, and just when things seem to be looking up, they come crashing down again. I try to support Bucky and reassure him. "She'll be okay Buck. She's with Tony. They'll figure out a way home." But he shakes his head and continues to cry. "Buck... it'll be okay..."

"No – No it won't. She's –"Bucky's words fail him, he can't seem to finish the sentence. He finally looks up at me and then to the rest of the team. I can't help his suffering, and it's eating me up inside. "She's – She's pregnant..."

The words hit me like a punch to the gut. I could hear Nat and Wanda gasp, their hands covering their mouths as emotions pooled in their eyes. The men all bowed their head, collectively we suffered with Bucky at the realization.

I couldn't find my voice. Nothing I could say right now would make this better. Bucky let out a yell and slammed him fist hard on the floor. I could see the tile cracked under his punch. Everyone was now looking at him, unsure of what to do or say. But just as quickly he got up, wiped the tears off his face and spoke. His face was now stone, determined. "I need to go be with Sarah for a little bit. We need to figure out what to do. We can't stay here. They want the Stone and I am sure they will be able to find us again. I can't risk Sarah, I won't."

Everyone nods at him, and I finally find my voice. "Go. Spend time with Sarah. We will figure it out. We're not going to let anything happen to her. We will call you once we know how we're going to proceed." Bucky nods and pulls me in for a hug, I can feel him holding back all his emotions, "thank you Stevie. Thank you for always protecting my family." He whispered this so lightly, that I am certain no one else caught it. "Go Buck. We got this." He lets go of me and walks out the room in search of Sarah and Pepper.

Once he leaves the room I turn back to everyone else, the team's faces are a mixture of grief, guilt, and anger.

"So we gotta assume their coming back, right?" Rhodey chimes in, diving straight into business. I know deep down he wants to protect Sarah at all costs, just like the rest of us.

"And they can clearly find us." Wanda chimes in, clearing a tear falling from her eyes. The look on her face is now angry and determined. They went after Vision, whom she clearly loves and she will protect him. But she'll also protect this family, and right now Sarah was clearly on her mind.

Bruce spoke up, I could see he felt a little lost in all of this. But I also saw a clear guilt in his eyes that I did not understand. "Okay, look... Thanos has the biggest army in the universe. And he is not gonna stop until he... he gets... Vision's Stone."

"Well then, we have to protect it." Nat spoke up as she came to my side and held my hand. She needed the contact to steady her emotions. (Y/N) was like a sister to her now, and knowing she's off far away in space and pregnant was probably worrying her more than she let on.

Vision stood from his chair and spoke up. "No, we have to destroy it. I've been giving a good deal of thought to this entity in my head, about its nature. But also, its composition. I think if it were exposed to a sufficiently powerful energy source, something, very similar to its own signature, perhaps... its molecular integrity could fail." He approached Wanda, giving her a solemn look.

"And you, with it. We're not having this conversation."

"Eliminating the stone is the only way to be certain that Thanos can't get it. They'll have no reason to come here. It will keep everyone safe."

Wanda's face was pained now. Vision's words were pulling at her emotions regarding Sarah. But she steeled her face, "That's too high a price."

Vison gently takes her face in his hands. "Only you have the power to pay it." But she pulls away from his touch, upset. "Thanos threatens half the Universe. One life cannot stand in the way of defeating him."
