sixty-three: Miss You.

WHEN THEY left, Kai patted JJ gently when they slowed down. "Can you drive me home?" He asked and JJ nods once, before going onto the route to Kai's house. Despite leaving his stuff at the Chateau and planning to stay there for the night, he also really wanted to see if his mom was home or not yet.

Once JJ parked, Kai got off and sighed when he saw his mom's car beside Raphael's. "Who knows... maybe my family and I will become happy and rich like Kooks." He said and JJ looked at him. "Why would you want that?" He asked and Kai just shrugs.

"I don't... but it seems to be what Raphael wants." He said and sighed, looking at JJ. "Good luck with getting John B out, but... I-I just have to see my mom and talk to her, you understand, right?" He says and JJ nods.

"Of course... I'll see you later?"

"Yeah. I'll see you later."

Kai didn't even get a kiss goodbye or even a hug but he didn't mind, as he had other worries in his mind, approaching the front door. He took a deep breath in and walked in. "Mom?" He called out as he shut the door gently.

He hears faint laughter and music playing, so he walks towards the kitchen to see Raphael and his mom dancing around. Like as if nothing was wrong. Like as if he didn't leave them sixteen years ago. Like as if how he felt didn't matter to his mom who looked so happy.

"Look at you two. Happy couple. Almost look like you're married with a wonderful family..." He said suddenly, stopping the music making them stop and look at him. "Oh, hi, honey... I missed you. Where have you been?" Aurora asked as she walked over to her son who glanced at Raphael who raised a glass cup, whatever was in it looked like it was liquor.

"At my friend's... hope that's okay." He says, glancing back at her. "Oh, yeah, of course... oh, my God, I heard John B was back. That's terrible, what happened... Kai, are you okay?" She asked and he looked around the kitchen. "No... not really. Can we talk?" He asked and she nods quickly. "Of course, sweetie."

They went out onto the front porch, Kai kept looking towards the front door before finally looking at his mom. "What's wrong?" Aurora asked and he let out a sigh. "What the fuck is he doing here?" He whispered.

She looked down, sighing as she brings her hands together. "Mom... I don't want him here." He says, shaking his head softly. "Raph... is good for us. He's back and... he wants to be with me again." She said and he scoffed.

"Probably gonna pull the same shit he did to you your Senior year. Mom... he is bad news, you taught me that from the start, when I asked you where my dad was, you told me he left us. That he only cared for himself. How are you so sure he's not doing the same thing again?" He asked as he flailed his arms around.

"Because... he loves me. And he wants to get to know you, Kai... He actually brought up a wonderful idea. That we move with him. To Florida. It still has beaches, he actually lives by--" "I wouldn't even care where the fuck he lives, mom, I don't want that!" He exclaimed, cutting off his mom who sighed.

"It would make me happy, Kai..." She said quietly and he shook his head, glancing down. "I can't believe you would do this. You're fucking selfish, you know that? And all because this fucking guy, who's really only a sperm donor to me at this point, came back and asked you to be together again? What? We're gonna be a big happy fucking family? I can't believe you gave me shit for dating JJ!" He got louder and that's when Raphael walked out.

"Hey, kid... I don't think you should talk to your mom like that." He said and Kai boastfully laughed. "You wanna suddenly be my dad? Shit, newsflash, old man, you need to actually be in your kid's life to be their dad... I don't wanna even be around you anymore. I don't give a fuck where you guys wanna move, but I don't want to. And I'm sure as hell not coming back home until that motherfucker leaves." He said as he pointed at Raphael, walking away.

"Kai! Kai, please, don't leave me."

He ignored his mom, continuing to walk off as the tears just streamed down his face. He grunts, glancing back to see Raphael hugging his mom. What the fuck?! He looked ahead of himself, reaching into his pocket where he grabbed his cigarettes and his lighter.

He wasn't really sure how much he smoked but then he got to the Chateau and sat outside, staring off into the woods. It was still a bit bright out and he was just thinking about what his mom and dad said, staring at the ground when a pair of shoes came into view.

Some fancy ass shoes. He looked up only to see Sterling Conner standing there before him. "What do you want?" He said as he crossed his arms, flicking his cigarette. "To talk..." Sterling merely said, sighing. "So... I figured I owe you an explanation and also an apology." He said and Kai just squinted his eyes.

"Why do you owe me shit? I'm just some dirty, peasant Pogue and you're the almighty, amazing Kook king... Right?" He said and Sterling sighed. "Can we please just go... for a walk or something?" He asked and Kai just stared at him. "Let's go sit by the dock... maybe whatever you say will make me wanna drown you." He said and got up, walking away.

"Um... okay?" Is all Sterling said but followed behind the other boy anyway. They walked down the pier, Sterling staring at Kai as Kai glanced around, feeling like this day just gets shittier by the second. They sat down and Kai just took out a cigarette, "you can start."
