IN THE back seat of Kie's car, Kai definitely regret what he had said that morning. "Because I can't afford to not focus on school, JJ!" He turned to the boy, picking up his backpack and checking if he has everything. "What? School is school, Kai... you know that, it's not--" "it might not be a big deal to you, but it is to me, JJ. Next year is our last year." He says.
"I need to make my grades better. I can't spend the rest of my life doing drugs, drinking beers and... whatever the fuck else we do!" He says, dropping his backpack to dig around for his shoes. He didn't wanna wear his other shoes. "What?" JJ laughs, "are... are you seriously freaking out on me over school?" He says and Kai looks over, sternly glaring.
"I don't wanna be stuck here, in the Cut... working for the rich Kooks in Figure Eight." Kai says and JJ sighs, bringing his hands together between his legs. "Like my dad... or me?" He says and Kai just gets up, "yeah, sure, whatever." He grabbed his backpack next.
"Kai. You're fucking kidding me..." JJ muttered and Kai stopped in his bedroom doorway, turning around. "I didn't mean it like th--" "I know how you meant it. Let's just go since school means so fucking much to you." Now they're in the back seat, JJ is ignoring him and drinking from a flask he had in his backpack that they had picked up from the Chateau.
He felt like he messed up and he didn't know how to fix it. He's hoping that he'll fix it soon, he never liked being in a fight with JJ, he always apologizes quickly when he's in the wrong and JJ apologizes right away after the fight whenever he's in the wrong.
But now, he didn't even know the right words to say to apologize to his boyfriend who's drinking. In a way, it's different, their fight, now that they're boyfriends. Before, they were merely best friends and Kai never had to worry about getting on his knees and begging for JJ's forgiveness. But right now, he had endless worries. Like what if JJ doesn't forgive him and dumps him? Or he just stays mad, ghosts him, doesn't even properly break up with him?
"Kai, you okay?" Kie suddenly asked and he glanced up. "Um, yeah." He nodded and she nods, glancing away from the rearview mirror as she parked the car in the school parking lot. Kai sighed, hopping out the car. "Are you sure you're okay?" Pope now asked Kai.
"Yes... I am." He crossed his arms, walking with Pope around Kie's car where they joined Kie and JJ. "If I black out, just don't remind me." JJ says and Kai sighs. "That's not funny." Kie tells him as the four of them walk together. People looked at them and talked about them.
They walk up to the memorial set up for John B, Kai stepped closer, in front of them. JJ joins him, standing beside him and Kai felt comfort despite the boy ignoring him. "I feel like people are staring at us." Kie says, looking around and JJ looks around. "Oh, yeah." He says and Pope looked at the three others.
"Guys, I can't be late." Pope said, walking off. Kai was about to agree and walk off too but JJ grabbed his wrist gently. "Hey. Hey. We gotta stick together." Kie said to Pope and Kai sighs, pulling JJ with him over to Kie who grabbed his arm, pulling him closer to her.
Between their second and third period, Kai was walking down the hall when JJ grabbed Kai's arm, pulling him into an empty classroom. "What the fu--" "It's just me..." JJ said quietly and Kai sighs. "JJ... I'm so sorry..." He whispered and JJ just pulled him into a hug.
Kai wrapped his arms around his boyfriend's neck, closing his eyes. "I'm sorry for being mad over something stupid... I should've cared more that you care a lot about school." JJ mumbled into his shoulder, his face pressed against his boyfriend's shirt. "It's okay... you had a right to be mad. I'd be mad too if someone compared me to my asshole father." Kai whispered, chuckling softly before pulling back.
"I'm really sorry... I didn't mean it like that." He raised a hand to JJ's face, caressing his cheek gently. "It's just..." He sighed, looking down. "Yeah, I know... Outerbanks is shit when you're a Pogue, you wanna get out of here. I do too, travel the world. Maybe even with you by my side..." JJ cups his face, brushing his thumbs against the skin underneath Kai's eyes.
"Yeah... Me too." He whispered back before looking up into JJ's eyes, staring back at the blond who just leans in, kissing him. "Let's not fight again... I don't like it." He says quietly and Kai nods, bringing his hands over JJ's on his face. "Yeah, me neither..." He says and JJ leans in once more, kissing him.
The longer they kissed, the more Kai tasted the alcohol on JJ's lips so he pulled away, "you need to stop relying on drinking so much when you feel like shit, J." He chuckled and JJ sighed, "but it helps so much." He leaned against Kai's chest making his boyfriend laugh again.
"Come on, we gotta get to class..." He says and JJ shakes his head. "A little bit longer, please?" He whispers, pulling Kai closer and the other gives in, hugging JJ back tightly. "I love you... so much. I don't wanna lose you." Kai whispered, closing his eyes and JJ sighed softly.
"Me neither... that's why I wanted to make up, after seeing the tribute outside for John B." He says, burying his face into Kai's neck now. "I miss him." Kai said softly. "Me too, Kai... me too." JJ whispered, rubbing his back gently. "God, I hope he's alive." Kai breathed out.
"I know he is... He is, Kai. Believe me..."
