𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐬𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐲

eighteen: Arresting.

THE next morning, neither of the boys even spoke anything about the night before, Kai was on his single bed by himself when he woke up with JJ awake and brushing his teeth in the washroom. Kai went straight to the kitchen and had some coffee before having a bowl of cereal.

They went about their day, hanging around and talking until they went to go and hang out with Kie and Pope so it wasn't just them. So, there they were, in the shop with Pope and Kie.

"Don't let it get in your head, brother. There's three of them and only two of us were fighting back." JJ said and Kai shrugs. "Because I had to go, and save your asses..." He looks at JJ and the blond just smirks at him before looking away. "It's some typical Kook shit..." JJ just says.

"Hell, yeah." Kie agrees and looked at Kai who glanced down. "What was your thought process with using your head?" Kai asked as he looked up at Pope who looks down. "I don't know, man. I just kind of acted off instinct." Pope says as Kie smiled widely. "Yes." She says, looking away.

"I was a cornered animal."

"Hey, Pope, someone here to see you." The group looked over at Heyward who walks in and deputy Shoupe shortly walked in behind him. "Evening, officer." Pope greeted the deputy making his way over. "I have an arrest warrant for felony destruction of property." He says and Pope looks behind him, over at Kai and JJ.

"What?"

"Hands on the counter where I can see 'em."

"Woah, woah, woah, wait, shoupe what'd he do?" Heyward asked as Shoupe grabs one of Pope's hands. "Take a look at the warrant." He says. "You're arresting him?" Kie asked, watching as the deputy grabbed Pope's other arm, bringing it harshly to the other one. "You're just arresting my boy?" Heyward asked the deputy, all of them clamoring over one another during the arrest.

"Be careful!"

"Shoupe, are you listening?"

"Anything you say can and will be held against you in the court of law." Shoupe said as he put the cuffs onto the boy's wrists. "You have the right to an attorney." Shoupe continued. "How much did they pay you, man?" JJ asked, watching the cop continue with his arresting Pope.

Kai watched as the deputy lead Pope away and he followed after Heyward and Kie, JJ right behind him. They followed, asking questions and clamoring over each other as they followed all the way outside to the cop car when JJ shouted out, "it wasn't him!" Right when the deputy opened the door to the backseat of the police car.

They all look at the boy standing a few feet away. "It was me." He pointed to himself. "JJ." Kai was about to argue but JJ shakes his head, "he tried to talk me out of it, but I was mad because he'd just been beaten up. I was so sick of those assholes from Figure Eight that I lost my shit." He said, now standing in front of Pope.

He looks at the boy, "I can't let you take the blame for somethin' I did. You've got too much to lose." He says as Pope watched in confusion and concern. "JJ, what are you doing?" Pope said as he steps closer. "I'm telling the truth." JJ says as he looked at the deputy. "For once in my goddamn life, I'm gonna tell the truth." He says before sparing a glance over at Kai standing with Kie.

"I took his old man's boat, too." He said as he looked back at the deputy. "What the hell?" Heyward says, looking at JJ. "JJ, come on." Pope argued. "Just shut up, Pope! Just shut up." He says, looking at the other before looking back at Shoupe.

"He's a good kid. You know where I'm from." JJ says, talking about his dad. And his home life. Kai looked down, crossing his arms before glancing back up. "Yeah." Deputy Shoupe says as JJ looks at Pope. "This was all me." He says.

"That's the whole truth?" Deputy Shoupe says as he looks at Pope who looks to him. "Whole truth, swear to God." JJ said, side-eyeing Pope. "I know what you think, damn it. I'm asking Pope." The deputy says as he gestured to the boy looking over at JJ. The two stared at one another for a couple of seconds, before Pope softly nodded his head.

"Yeah, that about covers it."

JJ looks at Kai who looked concerned as the handcuffs came off of Pope's wrists and onto JJ's. Kai rolled his eyes and looked away when he saw the smirk JJ was giving him as the cuffs were put onto him. Pope watched as the car drove off and he threw his hat onto the ground.

"Shit!" He shouts as he stormed off with Heyward shouting for him. Kie nudges Kai gently before they head off after Pope. "Why were you and JJ acting so weird today? I noticed the little looks." Kie said as he and Kai stood side by side, watching Pope from a couple of feet away, wanting to give him some space after what had just happened.

"Oh... th-that's nothing..." Kai just waved his hand and shakes his head as he turned away. "Oh, come on... he spends the night at your place and suddenly you guys are acting all weird?" Kie says as she crossed her arms, smiling.

Kai sighed and looked over at the other teen. "Nothing has changed at all?" He says, sounding unsure of it himself and Kie nudged her. "Come on... you can tell me anything." She says and he just shakes his head, confused.

"Nothing happened. No Pogue-on-Pogue macking. You know that." He says as he shrugs and looksd away. "And besides, we all know he only likes girls." He says and she sighs, putting her head onto his shoulder. "We don't know that for sure... anyways, something totally happened."

"Nothing happened!"

authors note ok but the scene of jj in the car with his dad... fucking breaks my heart, first time watching obx i had to pause it and take a minute because i was fucking upset by it and pissed off at his dad for ever hitting him
