𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐬𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐲

seventy-six: The Angel.

AFTER WHEN they met up with Kie, they're sitting on the porch of the Chateau when Pope spoke, "guys, this is from Denmark's diary." He said and raised the papers. "August 15th, set sail from Port-au-Prince on calm seas. Came upon the Spanish ship San Jose on fire. The entire deck was aflame. And we could hear the screams of men trapped below. The Spanish captain cared about only one thing, his valuable cargo, the Cross of Santo Domingo and countless bars of gold." Their friend read aloud the copied pages to them.

"Once the cargo was on board, we went to help the crew, but Captain Limbrey ordered us to pull bayonets and not let any of the Spanish crew on board. He robbed them and left them to die." He finished off the entry as Kai looked up, JJ's head was on his lap as the blond boy played with his zippo lighter in his hand.

"So it didn't go down off Bermuda." JJ says and Kai sighs. "And it was a Limbrey stealing shit again." Kie says and Kai glanced over at her then at Pope. "This diary proves that both the gold and the Cross of Santo Domingo were on the Royal Merchant." Pope says.

"Why didn't we find it in the well then?" JJ says as he snaps his lighter closed again with Kai running his fingers through his blond hair, but then he sat up, facing the others making Kai awkwardly retract his hand back.

"I mean, if Denmark was able to get this, like, bedazzled cross off of the Merchant to shore, why didn't he just hide it with the gold?" He asked and as he spoke, he brings Kai's other hand up to the back of his head, which Kai knew was his silent way of asking to keep playing with his hair, so he brushed his fingers through the hair at the back of JJ's head.

"Because it was too big." John B says, pointing at Pope and Kai nods, looking at JJ. "That's what she said." They both whisper in sync, making them both grin widely. "You're right. He had to hide it someplace else." Pope said as he looked over at the couple then at John B.

"But where?" Kie says, looking up at him and putting down the paper. "Right before he was hung, Denmark said he'd buried the treasure at the foot of the angel." Pope says, looking at her. "Wait, I thought this was about the key." JJ says after he had snapped out of his relaxation again of Kai brushing his hair.

"Right. So what's the connection?" Kie asked as Pope raised the key. "The path to the tomb begins in the island room." He simply says and Kiara throws her head back. "But what is the island room?" She then asked as she looks at him and JJ just stood up suddenly. "You know what helps me figure shit out?" He said as he smiled and Kai just sighs.

"I already know..." He says as JJ turns to the others. "Oh, boy. Here we go." John B says faintly. "Smoking weed, drinking beer and screwing Kai. But only I'm allowed to do the last one." He said and winked at Kai who's face turned red almost right away.

"The ideas just pour out of me." He then says and Kai rolls his eyes, smiling faintly. "If we just sit here and try to figure this out, we're gonna get nowhere. But if we get creative and go to this bonfire tonight, maybe we could get somewhere." He said as he glanced at Kai, grinning widely as his boyfriend just sighed.

"Well, I just got disowned by my parents, and I'm an official member of the I-have-nothing-to-lose club." Kie says, smiling as Kai thinks of his mom, his smile fading away. "Pope?" JJ says and the boy glanced up at his friend.

"We're so close."

"Look, look, think about how much you could think if you just gave your brain a rest." He said, down to Pope's eye level now. "Okay, fine." Pope gave in as they get excited. "Okay, great!" They all got up and JJ held out his hand to Kai. "Um," he looked up and stood up.

"What? We gotta shotgun before we go." JJ says, taking Kai's hand gently and the other sighed softly. "I gotta go check on my mom... but I'll meet you guys there?" He whispers and JJ nods, raising his hand to Kai's face. He leans in, pressing a small kiss to his boyfriend's lips before pulling back with a smile.

"Wait, what's wrong with your mom?" John B asked as he appeared behind JJ with the other two were heading inside. "She... uh, tried to kill herself again." He said and isn't surprised by John B's reaction. "Shit, I'm sorry, Kai... is she okay?" He asked quietly

"Yeah... Yeah, uh, I'm just gonna go check on her and I'll meet you guys at the bonfire, okay?" He forced a smile and John B nods, pulling him into a small hug before pulling back. "I'll see you at the bonfire..." He says and as Kai left, John B looks at JJ, "why aren't you going with him?" He whispered quietly and JJ sighs.

"You know Kai... he's private with stuff and he doesn't like telling me things half of the time, he literally keeps so much shit from me thinking I can't handle it... But I think it's him that can't handle it." JJ pursed his lips. "Anyways, enough about me and the love of my life, let's shotgun. Come on." He smacks John B's arm and the other rolled his eyes but followed behind the blond anyway, smiling.

"Love of your life? You two are cute..." He said and JJ just shrugs, "I know we are." He says. Meanwhile, Kai arrived to the hospital and took a deep breath before walking in and knew exactly where to go, taking out his phone. On his lockscreen, there's a message from three hours ago sent from his father about his mom waking up and that the first thing she asked for was to see him. He felt bad, that he hadn't gone until now despite seeing the message when it was first sent to him.
