𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐬𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐲

eighty-nine: Flowers.

     

     THEY DRIVE down the road in the van, seeing the wreck up ahead with the police cars all around it. "Oh shit! They found the truck!" Kiara exclaimed. "Chill, chill, chill, chill." Pope tells her. "Of course," JJ says, panicked as he putting on his hat. "Just relax, just relax." John B says, parking the van.

Shoupe approached their vehicle, "evening, officer." John B looks at him. "Sheriff." Shoupe corrects him. "Sheriff. Yeah, that's right." John B says, glancing away. "Speed kills, huh?" He said as he looks back at Shoupe.

"I pulled the tags, and I know whose truck that is." The man said before flashing his light behind JJ, at Kie beside Kai, slightly hiding. "Hey! Kie, you drop your weed pen back there?" He asked and she slowly comes out from hiding behind Kai. "Found it." She said as she raised her hand in a thumbs up gesture.

"Sheriff, I just wanna say that this is all my fault. She had nothing to do with this. I take 100% responsibility." Pope says, leaning forward from behind John B. "Nothing to do with it? Uh-huh. You wanna try that again? Your parents reported the truck missing four hours ago, and the keys were missing from the house. I'm taking you home. Or I can pull you all in for leaving the scene of an accident." Shoupe says and Kie glanced at Kai, then nods.

"Okay."

"Good. Plumb." Shoupe glanced over at the officer who goes over, opening the back of the van for Kie. "I gotta deal. Hit me up later and make sure I'm still alive." Kie says, getting out and grabbing her backpack. "Good luck, Kie..." Kai says and she smiles softly at him. "Bye," she says softly before walking away.

They arrive to Sarah's house, "he's got the truck." Pope says. "Shh! Stay low, stay low, stay low." John B says as they walk up to the house's fence. They watch Rafe pull up to the front of the house and park the truck. He gets out of the truck, "how much do you wanna bet Rafe has the cross inside that truck right now?" Pope looks over at them as Rafe heads in. "There's only one way to find out." Sarah says before she walks away. "Hey, hey, wait." John B goes after her and the other boys look over.

"This is so awkward... like every other moment they have right in front of us." Kai whispers before glancing over right as Sarah kisses John B so he looks at the others, "they're kind of adorable though." He shrugs.

John B comes back to the other boys, "hey, do you want me to preform your vows while you're at it?" Pope whisper yells. "Did you say be safe?" JJ says, sounding amused. "Christ, could you take any longer?" Pope says with his brows furrowed and Kai pats John B's back.

"What's she doing?"

Sarah goes up to the truck and looked around before turning to them, shrugging. "I need the keys!" JJ does the motion of turning on the engine with keys. "Come back!" Pope waved her back as she pointed. "I'm going inside. I'll be fine." She turns around.

"No. No. Don't go inside!"

"You said don't go in the house!" Kai looks at John B. "I told her," he simply says. "Do the birdcall!" Pope says but John B does it so bad, it sounded hesitant. "The fuck? That's not what a bird sounds like." Kai says right away and John B does it again, but much louder.

"Was that a dying chicken?"

"It's not-- it's a whistle."

"I'm going over." John B climbs up. "Go, go, go." JJ said before they're quick to follow but a honking golf cart interrupts them, "excuse me? Can I help ya?" The man said with his flashlight aimed at the three teenage boys.

He raised his gun, "I got double-aught bucks in this thing, so, uh, I can't miss." He said so they raised their hands. "Alright, buddy, off the wall." He said and JJ jumps down first, so he turns to Kai, helping him down before they raised their hands. "Sir, it's not what it seems." JJ says with his arms raised. "You boys ate on the wrong side of the island." The old man says.

After Pope and John B jump down, Kai glanced at them nervously. They try explaining the situation but then the man orders them to get down, so they all kneel. "I think I'm gonna call the police." The man says and Kai glanced up at him. "You don't have to do that, sir." He says. "I'll decide for myself what I need to do." The man said and Kai rolls his eyes.

"Sir, can I just talk to you for a minute? Just to explain..." JJ says making Kai look at him right away. "J..." He whispers. "No, I got this." JJ says quietly before standing up. "Sir, I know you think we're just some derelict kids from the Cut, but we weren't that to Mr. Cameron." He pointed towards the house. "Sure weren't." John B nods as he gets where he's going with it.

"We were his yard workers, sir." JJ says as he takes off his hat. "And we were just waiting for our yard associate Ja--" "Tommy..." John B cuts him off to correct him. "Tommy to get back from planting a row of flowers for Mr. Cameron's memorial." JJ explained.

"Keep talking."

As JJ finished off his whole speech, Kai's brows are furrowed together with his face scrunched up. "That's why we planted those flowers." JJ looks back. "Sure, yes." John B says with a bored tone. "Yep. That's why." Pope says as Kai just nods his head slowly. "Totally..." He says as JJ looks back at the man.

"You smell that, right?" JJ asked as the man sniffs. "What is that, night-blooming jasmine?" He asked the blond boy before him. "No, that's more like, um... like, uh..." He looks away. "Sir, that's, um... natural Viagra." JJ looks back at him. "Okay! Yeah!" Pope exclaims.

"Really?" The man asked with wide eyes. "One sniff and bam! It's hammer time! You know what I'm saying?" JJ asked as Kai grabs his arm. "Alright, alright. Our associate Tommy should be here any minute." He says and JJ pats the old man's shoulder. "We'll be quiet, alright? And we'll finish up here. I'm sorry to bother you." JJ says and the man gets into the cart. "Goodnight." Kai says, waving at the man.

"I gotta get some of those flowers." He said before he drove off and Kai snickers. "Have a good night, sir!" Pope waved and then he is out of sight. "Let's go!" JJ said before they all jump over the fence, running across the yard.
