𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐬𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐲

five: The Marsh.

   

   WHILE John B was down, diving, Kai felt himself being tugged away and to the other side of the boat. "So, you gonna tell me who gave you that?" It was JJ, pointing to Kai's neck. Obviously to the love bite bruised into his soft skin.

"JJ, can we talk seriously about something I should have told you before seeing as how we are best friends?" Kai asked and JJ nods. "Well, you see, the truth is that I... have been—" Kai is cut off by a siren coming off from a boat nearby. "Shit. JJ." Pope says and they both look over to see it was the cops in their boat, coming towards them.

"Guys, that's the police." JJ says and Kai mentally groans. "Oh, you gotta be kidding me." Pope says as he stood up. "Yep, that's the police." Kai sighs and crossed his arms. "Just act frickin' normal." Kie says as she adjusted her hair.

Kai went over to sit beside him right as the cops pull up beside to the Pogue. "Evening, officers." Pope greeted them. "Evening." The man said as the woman hands Pope a rope, "here you go." The deputy says and Pope quickly grabs the rope. "JJ, tie this off." He tells him.

Kai glanced towards the water, his leg starting to bounce a bit as the officers look at the teens. "How you kids doing? You know the marsh is closed?" Deputy Shoupe says to them and JJ looks to Pope. "No." JJ shakes his head as Pope acts surprised. "No. Wow." He looks at Shoupe.

"I didn't know that." JJ says as he glanced over at Kai who's leg was still bouncing. "Why is it closed?" Pope asked as Kai glanced around, noticing that Deputy Plumb noticed his nervousness. His leg bouncing. "Well, we're conducting a search out here. Boat went down." Shoupe says and Kai felt Kie's leg press into his, almost as if it were a warning to stop bouncing his leg so much.

"Oh." JJ and Pope say and Kai looks around again. "Seen anything?" Shoupe asked. "No." JJ answered for them. "No boats. No." Pope shakes his head and Kai glanced up at the two deputies. John B was taking forever and with the cops here, they'd be in big trouble if he came up.

"Where's your friend you always hang with? He here?" Shoupe then asked them and Kai glanced up right away. "He's working." Kai answered before the others could come up with an excuse making Plumb look at him since he hasn't spoken up until now. Shoupe speaks up, "I'm gonna check your little boat out." He grabs onto his for support as he climbed up and onto their boat.

"Yeah. Hop aboard." Kie said and Pope nods, standing up from where he had been sitting. "You wanna check, uh, check her out." Pope says as he walks by the deputy. "Thank you." The deputy said as he then roams around.

"You got another one of these?"

"Yeah, yeah. Of course, it's uh, it's in the hold." JJ points towards the compartment Kie and Kai were sitting on, the girl suddenly standing and pulling Kai by the hand up with him. "Show him." She says and Kai just stands there as JJ went to show the deputy the other life jacket while Kie and Kai stand right behind the blond boy.

"Yeah, here we go."

"Alright." Shoupe nods. "Yeah." JJ puts it away as the deputy looks at Kie and Kai. The girl still had her hand tightly gripping the boy's as they both plastered on fake smiles at him.

Deputy Shoupe continued to look around until he finally turns to them, "alright." Pope nods, "alright." He and JJ repeat after the man. "Beautiful day." The deputy says as he walks over to their boat. "Sure is." JJ agreed. "Very." Kai adds.

"You let us know if you see anything on your way out." Deputy Shoupe says as Kai and Kie went back to sitting where they had been previously. "Will do. Will do." Pope salutes them.

"We'll be gone soon, sir."

"Yes, you will."

As the boat went off, Kai looked at Kie before they both went over to the edge of the Pogue with the other two boys. "He's definitely out of air." Pope says and Kai sighed, not wanting to think of the worst case scenario. "There he is!" JJ says when John B finally came up to the surface.

"Oh, God! Jesus Christ! Don't scare us like that!"

"How'd it go down there?"

John B mutters and JJ rushes to help him, "did you find anything?" He asked and John B grins widely at his friend. "Did I find anything?" He says and JJ smiled back. "Yeah, there we go! That's my boy!" He said excitedly to John B.

JJ kneeled down and grabbed the bag that John B found. Kai stands with Pope and Kie, "you okay?" He asked John B who nods. "Yeah, I ran out of air." He said, panting slightly. "You scared the shit out of me." Kie said as John B climbed up onto the Pogue. "Yeah, the cops were up here, but uh, took care of 'em." Pope explains to him.

"My bad."

"You're all good."

"Yeah, you kinda missed the show, brother."

"Hey, guys? Guys, bogey, two o'clock." Kie says and Kai looks over. "What?" JJ says as he also turns around. "Do you recognize that boat?" Pope asked and Kai furrows his brows. "I've never seen it..." He says as he looks at Pope.

"What are they doing back here? The marsh is closed." Kie says. "I don't know. But let's not atick around and find out." JJ says and Kai looks at John B, almost wondering what to do. "JJ, get the bowline." The boy simply says.

"Yeah."

"Should we wait on 'em?" Pope asked and John B quickly answered, "no, we're not gonna wait on 'em." He says. "Go get the stern. Go!"

"JJ, hurry up." Kie says and Kai went over to his friend to help him out. "Guys, don't wait for me. Go." JJ said as Kai helped him. "I don't like the look of this..." John B says. "Maybe they're fishing." Pope says as they headed off. "Go! Go, go, go!" JJ hurriedly said to them.

"Go into the marsh."

"Let's go!"

"I'm going."

"Act natural. Act natural."

The men in the boat start to go the same way as them, right behind them. "Hey guys, they're following us." Kie informs them. "Oh, this can't be good." Pope said worriedly. "Shit." John B says and picked up some speed. "Dude, you gotta go faster!" JJ tells John B. "I'm going!"

"Gun it."

They were basically in a chase by now, and then one of them took out a gun, aiming it at them. The gun goes off, making them all duck. "Holy shit, guys!" Kie said, sounding terrified. "John B, get down!" JJ said as he got down, looking at Kai. The gun went off again, "oh, my God! We're gonna die!" Pope said loudly, ducking down.

The gun goes off again as Kie stood up, "shit. Pope, move." She goes to the front of the boat and that's when they shot at them again. "Get down, Kie!" John B says to her and she just goes back to the back of the boat. The gun goes off again as Kie throws a net into the water, that will surely slow down the two men shooting at them.

And it did, the boat whirring down as they got to get out of there, letting out relieved breaths and whoops of excitement. "That was insane..." Kie says as Kai puts a hand to her shoulder. "You saved us... thank you." He said before putting an arm around her shoulders and she chuckled, her arm going around his waist. "No problem." JJ noticed, glancing between the two and somehow he thought he connected the dots.

Kai and Kie. Equals the hickeys.
