𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐬𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐲

forty-six: Sitting Ducks.

AS THE three are running behind multiple houses, they reach one with a pool. "Sean? Ah, this is where you live, you Kook. Goddamn." JJ says as they run by four other teens in a pool. They finally reach Pope, running up to him as he slowly turned around to them.

"What? What does that mean?" Kie says when she saw his face. "Did you hear something?" JJ asked him. "He... he's meeting Ward right now. We gotta go. Come on." He says and they all rush off together to get back to the car.

Ward was meeting up with Gavin at the construction site beside the surf shop, where the four teens had gone to, hiding across the street from it. "Nice camera. Where'd you dig up that relic?" JJ says, looking at Pope next to him as Kai and Kie were on the other side of Pope. "Why don't you just use your phone?" JJ now asked and Kai just rolls his eyes.

"Well, first of all, I like my antique electronics." Kie glanced at the two boys on the other side of Kai who glanced at her, making an annoyed look. "And second of all, this is a telephoto. It allows me to get a close image from far away." Pope says and Kie looked away, "lord of the dorks." She says and Kai just chuckled.

"For definitive proof of witness payoff, we're gonna need quality glass." Pope says and Kai just glanced at him. "There he is." Pope nods and there he was, Ward Cameron running down the street with a bag in his arms. "Yo, get down." JJ says so they all duck down.

"And there's Gavin." Kai says as Gavin runs over to Ward, meeting him in the construction site entrance. "Where are you going, you son of a bitch?" Pope says under his breath as he pointed his telephoto at the two men.

"No, no, no, I'm losing him. Shit. Where's he going?" Pope asked as JJ looked behind them. "Hold on." He says before running away, then he whistled at them. "Yo! Hey, I found something. Come on." He waved them over so they all rush over to where he was standing.

"Gotta go up top." JJ says as he pointed before leading them over to the ladder. "That'll work." Pope agrees. "Hurry. Don't wanna miss anything." Kie says as she goes after JJ and Kai was right behind her. "You go first, you got the camera." Kai whispers to Pope who just nods, going after Kie up the ladder.

When they get up on the roof, the order is the same, from left to right, Kie, Kai, Pope and JJ as they get to the ledge. Pope raises his telephoto, "you rolling, Pope?" JJ asked. "Are you getting it?" Kie asked him next. "Yeah. Yeah, I see them." Pope says as Kai keeps wiping the rainwater off his face, grimacing slightly.

"Ward just handed Gavin something. I think it's a duffel bag." Pope says as the others look at him then back at the construction site. "Guys, I think this is a payoff." JJ says and Kai glanced over at the others with a worried look.

"Gavin doesn't look happy about something. It looks like he's yelling at Ward." Pope says and Kie glanced at him. "Why?" She says like as if he can also get audio on his telephoto. "I don't know, but he sure looks mad." Pope replies with as Kai bites his bottom lip.

"What's going on?" Kie asked as the two men began fighting. "I dunno. They're fighting over something." Pope says as Ward began punching Gavin. "They're really going at it." JJ says and Kai glanced over at him with a confused expression. "Ward's kicking the shit out of Gavin." Pope tells them. "What are they even fighting over?" JJ says, looking over at him.

"I don't know. I'm trying to see."

After a couple of moments, "holy shit. Ward's got a gun." Pope spoke up and Kai looked at him right away. "I bet that's the murder weapon." Kie says and Kai glanced at her.

When gunshots go off, Kai flinched and then they all ducked down. "Oh my God. Oh my God." Pope says. "What the hell?" JJ says as Kai closed his eyes. "No, no, no, no. That did not just happen." Kie says, looking down.

"Tell me you just got that."

"Enough to put this asshole away for life."

Kai stayed down as Pope kept watching, "this is freaking crazy." He says, leaning forward more so they all look up now, watching Ward who gets up, standing there by the opening, looking for the gun when he looks towards them. "Oh, no, get down, get down." Pope panicks, all of them hiding pretty quickly.

"I think we should go right now." JJ says suddenly and Kai nods. "Agreed. Pope, you have enough, right?" He asked him. "Yeah." The boy replies. "Hold on. He's coming out." He says and they watch as Ward rushed around, "there he goes. I think he's looking for the gun." He keeps recording Ward who runs down the street. "I think the gun just went down the drain. He's looking for it!" Pope says.

Ward was on his knees, reaching inside when Kie slowly leaned forward. "Hey, he's looking for the gun." Pope says and Kai watched as Kie stood up, "what is wrong with you?!" She shouted as Kai's eyes widen. "Murderer!" She yells as Kai grabs her, covering her mouth.

"Kie, what the fuck?" He whispered as she kept screaming against his hand. "Are you crazy?" JJ asked and she looks at them, pushing Kai's arm away. "I don't care if he hears me. He's a murderer." She says and Kai nods. "Yeah, we know that, Kie, and now he's gonna murder us." He says with an angered look.

"Guys, he sees us."

"Are you serious?"

"Come on. We gotta go. He's coming."

The teens rush over to the ladder, Pope going first, JJ right after and Kie follows them, but when she does, she steps on JJ's foot, which causes him to kick Pope. "Ah! My hand!" He shouted and Pope falls off, JJ falling right after as well because he lost his grip.

"Sorry. So sorry." Kie keeps apologizing. "Just go!" Kai says, feeling frustrated as he was last to go down the ladder after her. "Sorry." She repeated as she goes down next, Kai right behind her. "You fumbled it?" JJ says as Kai walks over to them. "Because you kicked me!" Pope says, sounding angry. "She stepped on my hand!" JJ gestured towards Kie.

"I was trying to hurry!"

"Let's go."

"He's coming."

In the car, they're all panting and sitting in their usual seats as Kai rubs his face. "Can someone fill me in on what the frick just happened?!" JJ exclaims and Kai looks at him, sighing as Pope groans angrily. "Holy crap. I can't believe it. Wait, wait. What were they fighting over?" JJ says as he looked at Pope.

"Uh... it was... it was a gun, the one Rafe used. He must have kept it." Pope says and JJ leans back. "Of course! Of course! The murder weapon!" He says as Kie held her phone up, "pick up! Pick up!" She says, panicking.

"Who are you calling?"

"Who do you think?"

Pope looks at her phone, "the cops?" He asked and she looks at him. "Who else am I supposed to call?" She says and Kai furrows his brows at her. "Why though? It's Ward! You know he'll get away with it." He says and she looks at him. Her phone call is finally picked up, "shut up!" She shouted, raising her phone up.

"Hello? Hi, somebody's been shot at the... the Grand Street construction site! You guys need to hurry because he's dying. I don't know if he's already dead or not! But you guys need to hurry! Please!" Kie shouts into her phone.

"We gotta go. We're sitting ducks right now."

"We can't stay here."

"What do you want me to do?!"
