𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐬𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐲

sixty-eight: The Cross.

     

         THERE'S ALWAYS many moments where Kai feels the most loved. It was always when JJ suddenly looked at him in situations where he needed help, back-up. Other times, it was when they'd be alone. When JJ's hands would grip his waist gently.

Pull him close. Kiss his lips softly. Kiss his cheek, kiss his neck. Whisper sweet nothings to him. But right now, Kai couldn't even focus on that love as JJ was kissing his collarbones, whispering how much he loved his boyfriend.

Kai was picturing it again. JJ leaned up, smiling widely. "Dumbass. I only pretended to love you because I thought Kie didn't love me back, but now she does and I can leave you now..." And then Kiara appearing behind him with an evil grin on her face. "Let's go, JJ."

JJ caught on that night, looking up at Kai who was staring at the ceiling while JJ was playing with the hem of Kai's shorts. "I'm about to... do nasty things to you and all you can do is stare at nothing with a blank stare?" JJ suddenly said, catching his boyfriend's attention. Kai sat up suddenly, "what? Oh... sorry, J." He said and leaned in closer to JJ.

"No, no, no, no," JJ stops him, pushing him back onto his back. "What's bothering you... seriously?" He laid down next to Kai, bringing his hand up to the boy's dark brown hair. He caressed the soft hair back as Kai just let out a sigh. "It's nothing... can we just sleep, J? We already... did it like three times last night." He whispered, shyly glancing away and JJ just smiled softly. "Yeah... sure, you're tired, baby. I get it." He laid down properly with his head on the pillow next to Kai's.

Then he moved closer, putting his head onto Kai's pillow. "You're so clingy, it's unbelievable sometimes..." Kai chuckled, moving to lay on his side and JJ excitedly moved onto his other side so he would be the little spoon. Kai smiled widely, putting his arms around JJ's waist as JJ's hands go over Kai's own.

They didn't fall asleep right away because JJ got up all of the sudden, thinking Kai was asleep. "Where are you going?" Kai is rubbing his eyes and sitting up slowly. "Getting a beer... want one?" JJ whispered back and Kai just yawns. "Sure?" He says, confused.

He laid back down and JJ didn't take long coming back, holding two beers. He kicked the door to the room shut behind him, "baby, here." JJ said as he walked over, sitting down and Kai sat up, sighing softly. "Thanks..." He says when JJ handed the beer over to him. "Wanna shotgun them?" JJ smiled widely at him.

"JJ, it's like almost past midnight... No." Kai says and JJ frowns. "Well, that's no fun." He said but Kai ultimately ends up giving in, shotgunning a beer with JJ. Then another. And another after that. "I'm gonna sleep now, I'm getting more tired." Kai yawned, laying down.

"You can sleep. I'm gonna get another beer."

Kai didn't fight his thoughts this time, he fell asleep and he was suddenly on a beach. "Kai?" He turned around to see Sarah standing there, giving him a weird look and she just looked around. "You know you can't come here... JJ is happier with Kiara." She whispered and Kai's breath hitched. "Yeah... No, I know that." He said quietly and then an arm went around his shoulders. "And he's happier with me. Ain't that right, babe?" He looked to his side and met eyes with Sterling Conner.

"Sterling?"

"Yeah. I said I'd wait for you if it ever happened, didn't I?" Sterling smiled and Kai's face turned warm. "You waited for me?" He asked quietly and Sterling nods, raising both hands to Kai's face. "Of course... I said I would, right?" Sterling whispered, stepping closer and leaning up, kissing Kai on the lips.

"Kai, what the hell?" JJ shook him awake and Kai opened his eyes, rubbing them slightly. "What?" He mumbled, half-asleep and JJ was eating a bowl of cereal. "I'm trying to enjoy breakfast and you just started moaning and shit in your sleep..." He said and Kai sat up quickly. "Oh... sorry." He looked around.

"Let me guess, it was a dream starring me?" JJ smiled widely and Kai looked at him, squinting his eyes a bit before nodding. "Yep. Yep. Yep." He whispered as JJ stared at him. "Was it not me?" He asked suddenly and Kai just got up, "yeah, it was you!" He said but his voice became high pitched and a bit squeaky.

"I know when you lie, Kai."

"It was a dream, it didn't mean anything, JJ."

And now, JJ was doing the cold shoulder treatment again as they were in the van, on their way to visit Pope's great grandmother. JJ sat in the passenger seat with John B driving as usual as Pope, Kie, Kai and Sarah sat in the back. "Guys, the thing that Limbrey said, I don't think she meant to let it slip." Pope says, looking up at the other three across him.

He looks down at the key in his hands, "she said the key leads to the Cross of Santo Domingo." He said, glancing to JJ who held out his hand. "Wait. Can I see that?" He asked and Pope hands over the key to him.

"Are we supposed to know what that is?" Sarah asked the boy who glanced at her. "I'm guessing it's some sort of historical artifact of great importance." He merely says as JJ examines the key before handing it to John B who held out his hand. "Well, according to the interwebs, it was a gift from New Spain to the Spanish King." Kie spoke up, holding her phone up as Kai leans closer to get a look.

"New Spain? Is there an Old Spain?" JJ asked and Kai grimaced as he looked at the boy in the passenger seat. "Shit, talk about over-gifting. Look at that thing." Kie said, showing the picture of the cross to the others as Pope takes the key back from John B, looking at the picture of the cross on Kiara's phone.

"Looks like there's a person standing next to it." Kie says as Pope examines the photo. "So it's a giant ass cross." JJ says. "It was widely considered at the time to be the most extravagant tribute ever from the provinces. It was lost off the coast of Bermuda in 1829." Kie said as she glanced up.

"Did you just say Bermuda?"

"Not the triangle." Kai said, furrowing his brows at JJ who looks at him. "It always leads back tot the triangle." He said, the first thing he said to Kai since that morning when he was asking about the dream Kai was having.

"Like every single time something's weird, it's Bermuda." JJ said, looking at John B now. "What does a key found above your mee-maw's pharmacy have to do with any of this?" Kie now asked Pope who looks at her.

"Yeah." Sarah says, glancing down at her lap. "Where do we come in?" Kiara then asked as Kai glanced from her over to Pope. "I don't know. That's a good question."
