"Lawrence," Dr. Collingwood said stoically. "I need to talk to you."

"Um, okay."

He gulped when she made eye contact with him. Her face didn't have that approachable, friendly quality it usually had. Instead, her eyes were colder than ice and her expression was unreadable.

"Our relationship isn't working out," she said flatly.

"Wh-What are you talking about? D-Did I do something wrong, did-"

"No," she said gravely, shaking her head. "We're not right for each other."

He was stunned into silence, listening numbly as she continued to speak.

"I'm not in love with you anymore, but I don't want to lead you on. I..." she lowered her head. "I'm breaking up with you."

With that, she turned away and left.

Dr. Collingwood waited until she was absolutely sure that Lawrence wouldn't be able to hear her, then broke into a run, sprinting to her office.

Once the door was closed behind her she slumped against it, slowly sliding down till she was sitting on the floor. She buried her face in her hands.

I just lost the best thing I ever had.
