Dr. Collingwood leaned against the dining table with a tired sigh. The day was exhausting, yet seemed to pass like a blur. It was well past midnight now, but she couldn't sleep.
Usually her father would've called her hours ago so he could talk to her, but he was probably tired. She didn't blame him. He was getting older and deserved his rest.
Her phone vibrated in her pocket and she rolled her eyes. Really? Someone calling me in the middle of the night?
She pulled her phone out of her pocket, saw that it was Lawrence calling, and answered it.
She opened her mouth to give a sharp retort about calling in the middle of the night, but was stopped by his hasty apology for doing just that and him telling her... the bad news.
When she heard it, she was stunned into silence and he continued explaining and apologizing. She wasn't really listening. All color seemed to have drained from the world. Some would have said she had a thousand-yard stare.
When he hung up she stood there, her mind trying to comprehend what he had told her. When it finally dawned it was like a train slamming into her. The phone slipped from her numb fingers and she fell to her knees with a loud cry.
Naga had breached containment and escaped the facility. They'd found him, but it was already too late.
Her father was dead.
