"Wow," said Billy, looking out the window. "It's the beginning of October, and it's snowing like it's midwinter."

"So is my new neighborhood," said Dr. Collingwood. "Seems like I always end up living in places that are cold. Just my luck, because I hate the cold."

"How is it over there so far?" John sat up.

She shrugged. "It's okay, I guess. The neighbors are okay, but they keep their distance."

"You still wear that mask when you go out in public?" Billy asked.

"Yeah. Why you ask?"

"Well, from what I know, I wonder how your neighbors would react if they found out what you looked like under the mask."

She shook her head. "I doubt they'd react well. I mean, you're talking about a damn old, four-eyed, half-burned rattlesnake here," she said, pointing at herself.

"Don't say that!" Lawrence exclaimed, suddenly appearing in the doorway. "You still look as beautiful as ever."

She quickly turned her head so that only the burned side of her face was visible, but it didn't take a genius to figure out that she was blushing pretty hard.

"Stupid boyfriend who says all the right things," she muttered, trying - and failing - to stop the smile on her face.
