                PROLOGUE

It was on the 24th day of July, I was finally graduating from high school, and we rushed out of the auditorium immediately the principal concluded his farewell speech. We were livid with joy, no more detentions; extra homework, failed subjects, dreadful exams..., they were all over. I clinched almost all the prizes and Mr. Harry’s voice still echoes in my ears.

“...Best student in English language, Fiona Douglas. Best student in mathematics, physics, biology and agriculture, Fiona Douglas...” those were the academic prizes I won. I also clinched some non academic awards,

“Most sociable student, Fiona Douglas. Neatest student, Fiona Douglas. Best female dancer, Fiona Douglas...” I wasn’t expecting an award for dancing but all the same, it was cool.

“...Best female swimmer, Fiona Douglas.” Yeah I was expecting that, I could go 50 laps a day and it was what really kept my ‘figure 8’ which was envied by almost all the girls.

My best friend, Florence, and I took loads of pictures with our classmates and those we’d be leaving behind. My parents were so proud of me and I took loads of pictures with them and my siblings too. There was only one person I wished was there but never was, Edward, my first, true boyfriend but he broke up with me two terms before we’d be leaving school, which was a day before Easter and a day after I gave him my virginity. He never told me the reason why he was breaking up with me and three days later, he’d vanished from the surface of the earth. No one knew where he went.

Florence was the only one who stood by me and understood what I felt for him. My parents never liked him especially mum because he’s a commoner, had no social status and poor. They never allowed him into the main sitting room when he comes over and he had his own chair at the waiting lounge. So when he disappeared, my parents especially mum were glad. ‘Good riddance’ they said. Only if they knew Ed took half of me with him. Only if they knew.
