A faint ringing could be heard in your bedroom, waking you up from your sleep. You groaned, swiping to answer the call.
"Hello?" You said, voice scratchy.
"Heyyyy (Y/N)! My bestie!" Maya's voice trilled.
"Maya? What are you doing this early? It's," you squinted at the time, "seven in the morning!"
"I know, but I needed to call you. I just wanted to talk to my best friend in the whole world!"
She was exaggerating, greatly. Suspicious.
"Please don't tell me you got arrested again. I don't think I have enough money for bail right now," you said, rolling over.
"No, and the girl hit me first so it doesn't count. But I do need to tell you something," she replied. You heard the shuffling of pots and pans.
"Kay," you said, voice muffled by the pillow. You put your phone on speaker.
"My parents are celebrating their anniversary today."
"Congrats."
"Yeah, it's thirty years. And they invited the entire family. Including you," Maya emphasized. "Isn't that great?!"
Wait a damn minute.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes. And grandma keeps saying she doesn't have much longer, you know the usual. And they haven't seen you in forever."
You inwardly rolled your eyes. Grandma May always used that excuse. She was 86, but still looked 65, and you expected her to live until at least 100. "Great. Did you want me to bring something?"
"Yes, I need you to pick up the cake and snacks."
You sighed. "Fine, when is it?"
"3 pm."
"I'll be there at 5."
"Why 5?!"
"You don't start any of your parties until 6 at least. And that's being optimistic. I'll become part of the setup crew. I don't wanna do that shit. Plus, your uncle's gonna tell me about his last wife and I'm not sitting through that shit."
Maya cackled. "I'll need you to come earlier 'cause I need help cooking and setting up. My brothers are weak as fuck."
You groaned again, slamming a fist on the pillow next to you. "You aren't even ready?"
"You know how we are."
You rolled your eyes.
"Don't worry, I know what you want. The cornbread will be ready by then."
You hesitated. "Who's making it?"
"Titi."
You internally smiled. Aunt Tammy was the designated cornbread baker.
"Got it. See ya," you mumbled, snuggling deeper under the covers.
"Oh!" she exclaimed. "Are you bringing Aria?"
You hummed in thought. "I don't think so. She hasn't even gotten to know you yet. Plus, I'm pretty sure she and Energizer are gonna watch a movie."
"Oh," she replied sullenly.
"Don't worry. I'll bring her by soon. Everything should be good by then."
"Thanks, babe, kisses!"
You hummed in response, falling back asleep.
4 hours later
"Alright. Don't open the door for anyone. I'll be back with food," you said to the group gathered in the living room.
