Shalnark hummed softly as he waited for you to pick up. He did not have to wait for very long however as the tone stopped at the second ring.

Like clockwork. He thought, smiling to himself.

"Shal?" Your voice came through the speaker. Hearing you was enough to make Shalnark's heart flutter a bit.

"Hi sweetie," he chirped into the phone. "Whatcha up to right now?"

"Hi Shal," Your voice went from alert to relaxed. "I'm just making some food right now."

Shalnark glanced at the time on his phone, mentally doing the math. At this time, it probably was dinner for you. Meanwhile on his end of the world, it was already well into the evening. "What's on the menu tonight?"

"Nothing special, just some leftover meat dumplings from the other night," you said, snorting as you added, "I was too lazy to make something from scratch, and I didn't feel like calling in either."

Meat dumplings. The thought made Shalnark's mouth water a bit. The one thing he always missed while being on these jobs was the taste of your home cooking. A bit lost in his thoughts about food, he almost missed your follow up.

"How has business negotiations been going up there in Padokea going?"

"Oh it's been going great!" Shalnark said with a laugh. "We had a pretty difficult negotiation, but we managed to nail it in the end."

"Really?"

"Yeah," Shalnark said, leaning onto the bench he was seated on. "It wasn't a deal that we expected to go smoothly but it did get a bit... explosive at times."

Of course, that was partially a lie. Yes, the business transaction had been... successful. However there were some particular details that he omitted for reason.

"I don't even want to imagine," you said, and Shalnark thought he could hear the sizzling of the pan. "The corporate world can sure be cut throat sometimes. It wouldn't be a surprise for some people to be at each other's neck."

"It is what it is sometimes," Shalnark said, glancing around. It had gotten quiet, which was no surprise considering what time it was. "However, our team was able to collaborate effectively. We came out on top at the end."

"Wow, you sure sound confident!" You said, your laugh echoing through the receiver.

"What?" The blonde said with a fake pout. "Do you not believe in my master negotiating abilities?"

"Of course I do," you said, reassuring your boyfriend. "It's just you're always so sure of yourself. It's kind of amazing honestly."

"Are you saying that I'm cocky?"

"...perhaps?"

Shalnark dropped the offended act and giggled. Friendly banter was a normal interaction between the two of you - something that hadn't changed since you started dating. "Well maybe I am, but whatever gets dinner on the table and gets me home sooner right?"

"Yeah that's true," you said. "Just don't make too many enemies, okay? Or else they'll go for your head when you least expect it."

Eh, it's a little late not to do that... Shalnark thought to himself. "I'll try not to get to caught up in it."
