 meruem and komugi have died peacefully, hand in hand. they meet again in an unexpected afterlife, but this time komugi can see.

Ah, so this is the afterlife? So none of those religious humans were right.

He laughed, staring at the infinite void of white around himself, suspended weightless in the air. It didn't scare him, but he was surprised. He had expected and accepted that he would fall asleep into nothingness, but didn't expect to be conscious within it. He had no understanding of time passing. He wasn't even sure if time existed here.

But then he looked down, and there was his body. He still had his body. He clenched his fist, feeling dimensions and time fall into place. He existed here, with seconds passing as he moved, and this place felt a bit more like Earth.

He sensed the girl behind him a few moments later, though she didn't make a sound as she materialized. And with that, this place felt a lot more like home.

You're here... I'm so glad you're here.

She gave no response, but he felt comforted by her presence as he stared ahead into the light.

This can't be what they call 'Heaven', because I wouldn't go there. But it can't be 'Hell' either, because you wouldn't be here with me if it was.

He wasn't sure what to do with this void, so he decided to experiment. He remembered something... a strange tradition among humans.

Give me a rose.

To his satisfaction, one materialized before him, its petals red and fresh as if it had been cut directly from a bush on Earth. He reached out into the void and grabbed its stem gently, acutely smelling its sweetness. He realized with a smile that he maintained his superior senses even after death.

Clutching the flower, he slowly turned around to face the girl he sensed. His eyes widened.

Komugi?

He absentmindedly released the flower from his grip, distracted, and it drifted away as he quickly moved towards her.

What's wrong?

She was completely still, staring at him. Her brilliant eyes were wide open, and tears were streaming down her cheeks, snot bubbling from her nose. Her silent cry turned into choked sobs as the man reached out for her.

What's wrong, Komugi? Are you hurt? Are you sad?

She wrapped her hands around him, taking a deep breath in before finally speaking.

It's beautiful, Meruem! It's s-so much more beautiful than I would have... have ever thought!

He moved his head back to look at her, comprehending her words.

So you mean you can...

I can see, Meruem! Out of my eyes!

He felt something uncontrollable rising from the back of his throat, from the corner of his own eyes. This had never happened before. He was powerless against it... this was the result of unfamiliar, powerful emotion. It spilled over, and he was soon in tears as well.

Oh no... oh no, Meruem, I didn't mean to make you cry, I- Please forgive me! I didn't mean to-

Creeping from below this wonderful emotion came something negative he had never felt before. It was strange and awful, like the longing feelings of jealousy, but for everything you're not. He had heard a word for it before. Could it have been that pitifully human 'insecurity'?
