The green room after an interview has an otherworldly atmosphere.
There are no more makeup artists running back and forth to hurriedly powder much blush onto your cheeks, no more pinching of your skin on accident by the seamstress making final adjustments to your outfit, or your manager talking your ear off about what talking points to push.
You gulp down the remainder of your water bottle at a record speed.
"Great work today," your personal assistant, Maya, praises. "Your personality shined through for each answer you gave. Though, I do wish the host's questions weren't so shallow, but it's pretty much what we expected."
Slinging your purse over your shoulder, you give a sheepish smile. "It wasn't all bad. At least he let me talk about the inspiration behind my songs and not just my ideal boyfriend."
"How can show producers not find a man in his sixties asking a young woman about her dating preferences weird? I had half a mind to storm out there and ask what his preferences are, what with how he's been married four times!" Maya exclaims in a hushed whisper.
You give a genuine laugh for the first time that evening. "We know one thing for sure. His type runs on the younger side if you calculate the mean of their ages."
Maya shushes you but returns your smile in full. "Forget about him. I meant what I said, you did a great job. I've already bought your album three times, but this interview made me want to go out and get a fourth."
"Only three albums?" You inquire with a scandalized gasp, placing a hand to your chest and pouting. "But you bought ten for my debut. Could it be that I'm losing your favor?"
She rolls her honey-colored eyes and holds the door open for you. You walk side by side towards the exit, bidding farewell to the various staff scuttling about, and thanking them for their hard work towards tonight's program.
"You wish you could get me out of your hair that easily. Don't think I forgot that look you gave me when I woke you up in the car earlier," she jokes.
"What look was that again?" You hum. Maya puts a hand to her face, in faux deep thought. Throughout your brisk walk, you made it to the studio's garage, the city's distinct sounds going from muffled to overbearing in an instant. Blaring police sirens whir by, accompanied by ambulances. The two of you paused to take in the scene. While not unusual in Yorknew, the sheer amount of cop cars was unlike anything you'd ever seen.
"That's not for you, is it? I know you filed your taxes late last year," you poke Maya's cheek, to which she swats your hand away playfully.
"Geez, when will you forget about that? I thought I've bribed you with enough dinners by now," is her lamentful reply. She ducks away when you try to ruffle her messy, shoulder-length brunette hair, scowling at how your laughter echoes in the garage. Maya would normally chastise you for acting so friendly towards her in public, but figures there's no harm with it being just the two of you out here.
You make it down to the second floor, where your car is parked. Maya walks to the driver's side and you raise an eyebrow.
"Hm? Could Smith not make it tonight?"
She nods her head, opening the door and unlocking the passenger side. "Said something about coming down with a nasty cold. I can't have my songbird getting sick!"
