“Cameron! Oh my god I've missed you!” She exclaimed, almost tackling her older brother to the ground as she hugged him.
“Easy Paige!” He laughed, hugging her back tightly. He kissed her several times on the cheek before they let go.
“How come you're here?” She asked, trying her hardest not to sound rude. Her brother never came to visit her, he was so high up in the industry he was in he couldn't risk spending time overseas to visit his family. Paige didn't blame him. If she had the choice she would get a high paying job overseas, move away and never come back.
“I came to visit you, I landed on Saturday. But you weren't here!” Cameron moaned. His sparkling blue eyes looked upset as he spoke.
“Yeah, well, I...” She searched for an excuse. “Had to go and see somebody.”
“Don't tell me it was a boy!” Cameron barked. She quickly shook her head, afraid of his dominance.
“No, it was a girl.” She rushed.
“Good.” Her mother said calmly. Paige had almost forgotten her mother was there. She turned to Danny.
“How come you're here?” She asked. She didn't mean to sound rude but that was how it came out.
“Paige!” Angela growled. “That is no way to speak to your boyfriend!”
“B....boyfriend?” Paige asked. Angela nodded.
“Good, you can speak.” She teased. “Yes boyfriend, we discussed this, on the day of Sam's funeral.”
“Mum... I can't.” Paige spoke, the most honest she had been with her mother the entire 16 years she had known her. Although she knew her mother didn't understand, her mother didn't know the real reason she couldn't have a boyfriend.
She wanted somebody else.
“I'm not doing it mum.” Paige flatly told her mother.
“Yes you are.” Her mother's tone was so threatening it gave Paige shudders.
“You can't control my life!” Paige blew off, storming out of the room. She heard her mother's impatient sigh, and to her surprise she turned around and punched the first thing in sight. It was a vase filled with flowers and water, which shattered to pieces and left the flowers lying limply on the floor. Paige stormed up to her room, slamming the door and throwing herself onto her double bed. Her eyes filled with tears until they splashed over the surface of her eyeball and rolled down her cheeks. She sobbed hard for a good ten minutes before she heard a knock on the door. Cautiously, she made a soft grunt, and two boys entered the room.
Cameron and Danny looked over her, Cameron standing strong hard ground, looking in control, and Danny whimpering away in the background as if just his presence was going to set her off. She felt guilty, Danny looked genuinely hurt and sorry. He was exceptionally handsome, she had to admit, which is what she had thought when she had first been introduced to Sam. He had beautiful, dewy tanned skin that shone in the sunlight and glowed as the sun began to rise. His eyes were deep brown and his hair the same, which was gelled upwards and over with the short amount of hair he had. She almost always expected to see him with a surfboard under his arm as he walked around, seeing as he spent most of his time with it. He was beautiful, she had to admit, but she wasn't attracted to him, not in the way that her mother wanted her to, and probably the way he wanted her to as well.
“I talked to mum.” Cameron told her in his straight-forward, obvious tone. He smiled and sat down on her bed. She adjusted her position, so she was sat up, her legs crossed over her. Danny came and sat on the edge of the bed as well, giving her a comforting smile.
“Yes..?” She asked after her didn't say anything for about a minute.
“She said she will wait a week. Next Monday, your relationship with Danny will hit the press.” He told her, smiling as if he had just found the cure for cancer.
“That's all I get!? A week!? A week of freedom before this happens all over again, before I fall into yet another relationship that's been planned with none of my own wishes. Don't you ever think about me, and what I want? You're so selfish!” Paige broke down into another wave of tears. Danny rubbed her back comfortingly, giving her a weak smile.
“Paige!” Cameron commanded, as if she was a dog. “I'm doing my best to make you happy!”
“I'm sorry.” Paige said, looking down and giving into him, like she always did.
“I forgive you Paige, I always do.” Cameron said, grinning like a loon. She smiled and leaned over to hug him, and then hesitantly did the same to Danny.
“I'm sorry.” She told him. “For making such a fuss. You're a great guy, I just...”
Danny gave her the most genuinely worried, considerate, understanding look she had ever received.
“I understand this can't be easy for you, Paige. I mean, Sam was the greatest man I ever met. So if I can help you with your loss somehow, tell me, we can get through it together. And I know you may not want a relationship for a long time. But I had just as much a say in this relationship as you did.” He looked down for a second, smiling at her before looking back up. “I understand you may hate me for having to be your 'boyfriend', but I hope you don't.” Paige smiled, giving him another hug. He reached his hand out and she held it comfortingly, not like a romantic hold, but a friendly one.
“Well, you should get some sleep, you've got training today.” Cameron told her, kissing her on the forehead. “I really missed you.”
“I missed you too.” Paige smiled.
“Good night.” Danny told her, also walking out of the room. She smiled and nodded, which he accepted gratefully. He didn't expect that much from the beautiful girl he was lucky enough to be 'dating.' He had loved her, ever since the first day he had met her, back when Sam and her had been dating. And now, it seemed like everything was falling into place. If he could only get her to fall for him.
Paige retired to the expensively comfortable mattress, pulling the fluffy covers up to her shoulders. She nuzzled her head into the softness of the feather pillows, closing her eyes lightly. It felt so good to be back in her bed, in her bedroom. It had been so long, she felt, since she had been able to sleep comfortably in her own bed. The room was expensively designed, with so much room there was a drinks bar, bedroom area and lounge room all open plan behind just one door. Through another door was her en suite, walk in wardrobe and dressing room.
If you're going to act like a star, you have to live like a star.
She remembered her mothers words, the first words of decent wisdom that had ever come out of her mouth. Suspiciously, she rummaged through her bag for the everlasting 'ping' of her IPhone as her twitter account went crazy. Sure, she was used to heaps of re tweets and favourites, and regular messages from fans. But she hadn't posted anything for days, and there was nothing really big happening with her at the moment, which she expected was why her mother was setting her up with Danny, the son of the richest man in the country, as far as she knew. Curiously, she checked her notifications, and found everyone was going crazy over a photo. She was confused, it had been days since she had posted a photo, maybe even a week. She scrolled through her mentions, to find mostly 'How long have you two been going out?' and 'You're perfect together.' Granted however, she hadn't scrolled too far down when she checked her direct messages, looking for a familiar face. She was just about to charge downstairs before she finally found a message, saying 'Check this photo <3' and a link from somebody she knew, not a fan. Warily, she clicked on the link, although she had full trust it wouldn't be another stupid rumour or leaked photo. And when the photo finally loaded, which it seemed was liked by half of twitter, she stared, and stared and stared until her eyes fogged up, before lying down, falling into beautiful dreams with the photo to her chest and her mind thinking of that photo. Over and over and over. Suddenly, it was like all of her worries had washed away.
