She woke up in cold sweats, beads of nervousness dripping off her forehead. She checked the alarm, 5am. Oh well, she was going to have to be awake soon. But she couldn't get Danny's evil face out of her mind, the way he had looked in her dream. The way he spoke, the way the murderer spoke. She wasn't sure she wanted to address him as Danny any more, it was like to her he was so despicable he didn't even deserve a name. She noticed several texts from Beau, but she couldn't read them yet. She had to use all of the willpower she had to peel herself out of bed.
She made her way to the shower where she turned the hot water on full, stripping down until she was naked. She stepped into the shower and immediately felt the piercingly hot water tear into her back. She was numb to pain. Wow, that was going to leave a mark. She couldn't feel anything any more. She could see the burn in her mind. She was going to be murdered today. Today her life would be taken away from her. She didn't deserve to be happy, she thought. She didn't want to die from him, she didn't want to give him the satisfaction. It was like all of the hot water on her back was ripping it apart! She shut the water off and tried again, moving the knobs slowly to get a cool temperature. She was terrified to turn the water any higher. She wasn't going to die today, she was going to fight him.
She had tossed and turned about wearing her bulletproof vest, but decided it was better that she wore it. The more protection, the better. Over that, she wore a white flowey shirt and pink shorts (seeing as it was summer), with the heaviest, thickest pair of white Doc Martins she could find. She was going to fight him. Fight against him. She did her make up and straightened the ends of her hair, only because she expected that she would wear that same outfit for the rest of the day and if not, then she wanted to look good when she died.
She met James outside her house, waiting outside his ute. She knew that if they drove her car, Danny would recognise them straight away. She wanted to be a surprise. It was his Christmas surprise.
“Ready?” He asked, looking equally as nervous. He was wearing a 'Janoskians' hoodie and jeans, the kind of structure of the outfits he wore most days. She nodded.
“Ready as I'll ever be. You?”
“So ready.” He told her, opening the car door for Paige. She sat in and he closed it after her, getting in on the passenger side. Paige knew the route to Danny's house better than James, and James knew he would get them lost so he didn't even bother trying to convince Paige to let him drive.
“You got your stuff for New York?” She asked.
“It's in the ute. I figured we could drop it off at yours WHEN we get back.” Paige smiled at his response.
“Please, just take my mind off everything so I can get us to Danny's house in one piece.”
They ended up singing 'Living on a Prayer' by Bon Jovi at the top of their lungs for most of the ride. The conversation was awkward and they didn't know what to say to each other but at least when they sang their minds were somewhere else. They pulled up to Danny's house just as the song ended, and the silence immediately clouded over them. James looked over to her, moving a strand of hair out of her face. He was terrified, but he wasn't going to tell her that.
“In case you don't, you know...” James started awkwardly.
“Please, let's not do this.” Paige said, with tears gathering in her eyes. “Let's just pretend that it will all be fine.”
“I'll miss you Paige, so much.” James told her.
“I'll miss you too.” They grabbed each other and pulled into a tight embrace, not wanting to let each other go.
