“Excuse me!?” Paige exclaimed.
“Yeah, so it seems.” Michael told them.
“What a little...”
“Skip!” Paige warned.
“I'm sorry, Paige. But this Sanchez guy...”
“Do you remember what he looked like?” Michael asked. “I can type his appearance into the national database and try to find him?”
“Erm, tanned skin, brown eyes, really soft dark brown hair.” Paige replied dreamily. As she finished her sentence, Skip bit his lip in anger.
“That son of a ….”
“Danny.” Paige sighed. “How could he?”
“You don't know that for sure?” Michael reasoned. “I know Danny, he wouldn't do that to you.”
“Yeah, well nobody expected it, of course.” Paige trailed off. She watched as Michael continued to type on his laptop.
“What are you doing?” She asked, looking over the screen.
“Look! There are almost a million Australians who fit your description! It might not be Danny?”
“Why are you sticking up for him?” Skip asked as he sidled over to Michael, his arms crossed.
“Danny was the only boy who stuck up for me in high school. He's not like that. He wouldn't kill someone just to get the girl.”
“I'll kill him Paige.”
“Let's just sort out who else it could be.” Paige was almost pleading now, for Skip to forgive Danny of a crime she was not even sure he had committed.
“Paige!” Skip shouted, holding her by the shoulders. “It's him. I don't care what you have to say about it, it's him. And nothing you say can change the fact that there is a killer in your life and you need to get him before he gets you!” The words made Paige shiver with fear.
“L...let's go.” Paige shuddered. And all of a sudden, she felt so alone, so unincluded in everything that the fire that mirrored the one that had burnt her lover's innocent body was burning, as if she too was looking to capture a body. For so long, her mind had been clouded with lies and fear and doubt to cover up the cold, hard truth. Sam Leonardo Parker, had died almost a year ago. Not to cancer, or disease or anything, but to murder. A cold blooded, jealousy driven murder. Performed by none other, then his best friend.
“Take me home.” Paige ordered to Skip. He looked shocked, his mouth dropping open. It was rare that she was ever annoyed. “Now!” She bellowed, in such a harsh voice that Skip immediately ran over to the couch to retrieve his car keys.
“I wouldn't if I were you.” Michael warned.
“What!? Why?” Paige asked saucily, her hand on her hip.
“Because the bridge is flooded, you idiot.” Michael informed, motioning his eyes over to the window. The bridge was captivated by a deep puddle of swirling water, which deepened by the second.
