“Mum!” Paige exclaimed, completely pulling away from Beau.
“Mrs Arrows?” Beau asked, wide eyed. From the magazines, he knew what she was like.
“Miss Halt, thank you.” Angela replied.
“Your using your maiden name!?” Paige exclaimed.
“Your father and I are going through a rough patch.” Angela confessed, although she didn't really sound upset at all. “Which you would know if you were home.” Angela's eyes directed over to Beau, who was standing his ground. “Have you been sneaking out to see this boy!?” Angela exclaimed.
“No!” Paige replied. “I haven't been sneaking out. I've been walking out of the house, perfectly visible, but you're just too self-centered to notice me!” Paige screamed back.
“You're not dating him.”
“Try and stop me!” Paige shouted.
“You'll pay for this.” Angela warned her. “I want you home tonight.”
“Alright.”
“And I'm going to call your boyfriend!”
“Why, he's right here?” Paige challenged, pulling Beau closer to her.
“Just wait, Paige.”
“I'm waiting.” Paige told her, stepping up to her mother so they were only inches away from each other. Their stares remained cold.
“Be careful, Paige.” Angela warned, her stare cold.
“What was that about?” Miss Grace shuffled over.
“Just mum, being mum.” Paige replied.
“You were great, standing up to her.” Beau replied, hugging her tightly from behind.
“I've always hated her.” Miss Grace confessed. Beau sniggered. She turned to him, giving him a challenging look.
“I'm sorry, you just remind me of my Gran.”
“She must be pretty hot.” Beau burst out laughing, his childish, cute laugh.
“Yeah, now you're nothing like my Gran.” He told her. She looked at him for a moment, trying to read her face.
“Why, is she ugly?” Miss Grace asked, trying not to sound too harsh. Beau smiled.
“She's beautiful.” He told her. There was a silence for a second as Miss Grace pondered whether or not to bring up the subject on the tip of her tongue, but she figured he would find out soon enough anyway.
“About Sam's goodbye.” Miss Grace told her.
“Oh, yeah.” Paige said, bowing her head.
“Can you get away for Christmas?” Miss Grace asked. “Or get your parents to come out of Australia?”
“Probably, if I can arrange a business meeting there.” Paige told her.
“Well I was thinking, we could go to a place where Sam always wanted to go. Have some kind of goodbye for him there. Because I was thinking we could give him a real goodbye, a real send off. So you can be free and live happily with Mr Brooks. I know that's what Sam would have wanted.”
“He always wanted to go to New York City.”
“And you never went?” Miss Grace asked, completely shocked.
“No, we never really had the time.” Paige confessed. “And I think mum knew that there was a chance I wouldn't come back.” Miss Grace chuckled. “We could go to Central Park, and do some kind of ceremony there?”
