It started with a knock at the captain's ready room.

Scotty stood beside Teyla, hand resting at the small of her back, as they faced Captain Christopher Pike. He'd just wrapped a meeting with Commander Chin-Riley when the pair stepped in, visibly anxious.

Pike raised a brow. "Lieutenants. What's the occasion?"

Teyla didn't wait.

"I'm pregnant, sir."

Scotty blinked. "Well then, straight to it."

Pike's eyebrows rose—but so did the corners of his mouth. "Well," he said, leaning back in his chair, "congratulations. That's big news."

Teyla nodded, hands folded over her stomach. "There are complications. The baby's Kellerun-human hybrid physiology is... unstable. Dr. M'Benga believes I'll need constant monitoring."

Scotty added, "It's a ten-month gestation period, longer than most species aboard. And she's already feelin' the toll."

Pike leaned forward, concern settling into his voice. "What kind of toll?"

"Spinal strain, respiratory constriction, circulatory fluctuation," Teyla answered evenly, as if reading a mission brief. "There are moments I feel like my body's shutting down. But we're committed to seeing this through."

Pike looked at her closely, then Scotty. "You've both been exceptional officers. You have my full support. Whatever you need, you get it. That's not a courtesy—it's a promise."

Scotty exhaled in visible relief. Teyla offered a faint but genuine smile.

"Thank you, Captain," she said quietly.

Month 5

The changes were impossible to hide now. Teyla walked slower, sometimes limping when the pelvic pressure grew too much. Her usual precision in tactical drills was replaced with quiet observation. She stepped back from field missions altogether.

Scotty became even more devoted—hovering, fussing, carrying anything heavier than a tricorder. He rigged their quarters with custom grav-comfort furniture, a modified sonic shower calibrated to ease her joint pain, and even a protein replicator coded to Kellerun prenatal dietary needs.

Still, it wasn't enough to stave off the wear.

There were nights when Teyla cried quietly while curled in his arms. Her back ached, her skin felt like it was burning from the inside, and her body didn't respond to standard pain management.

"I'm strong," she whispered once. "I've endured worse than this. But it's... constant. Like carrying a storm that never passes."

"You don't have to prove anything," Scotty murmured into her hair. "I see you. Every damn second. And I've never loved you more than now."

She wept harder at that. Not from pain, but from being seen.

Month 10 – Day One of Labor

The Enterprise was mid-maneuver in the Lentari Expanse, assisting a stranded freighter caught in an unstable particle storm. Temporal rifts opened and closed unpredictably, wreaking havoc with the ship's systems.

Scotty was coordinating field recalibrations from Engineering, sweat pouring down his neck.

Then the call came through the comm.

"Medical emergency: Lieutenant Commander Zire. Active labor. Multiple complications."

The world narrowed.
