Claire's POV
"Bubba, I'm going as fast as I can" I tell my 4 year old as I try and zip up his dinosaur costume. He's been a dinosaur every year pretty much and still not out of the dino phase.
I had already put Haven in her little butterfly costume and it only took about 2 minutes... It's been 5 minutes and still can't zip up Zealand's costume. He was really anxious to get to trick or treating even though it's still light outside.
Nolan knocks on the door. I let go of Zealand's zipper and open the door. Zealand crosses his arms and gives me his pouty face that looked identical to his father's... Ugh the words I hated.
"Need help?" Nolan says as he watches my son throw a mini tantrum
"I can't zip his costume up" I tell him and Nolan starts pulling on the zipper, until... It breaks off
"Oops" Nolan says as he holds the zipper in his hand. Zealand turns around and I see tears
"My dinosaur costume" he whines
"Aw, I'm sorry buddy" Nolan says and hugs him "it was an accident, I didn't mean to, I just pulled too hard" he explains and Zealand cries in his arms
"Its ok Zealand, I have your batman costume in your closet" I tell him and start to go to his room, but I hear him stomp
"I don't want to be batman, I want to be a dinosaur!" He yells and takes the zipper from Nolan "we can fix it" he says
"Buddy, we have to go trick or treating now or we'll miss it" I explain and he puts his head down
"Aww" he whines and I feel bad. He was looking forward to wearing his new dinosaur costume. I tried my hardest to find one that would fit him, and this was the only one that did.
"I'm sorry bubba, but it's either batman or we can't go" I tell him and he puffs his lip out
"Ok" he says, clearly very upset. He gets into the batman costume and he grabs his bag and goes outside. I pick Haven up and Nolan follows me outside. I lock the door
"I really didn't mean to hurt his feelings" Nolan says
"I know, it was an accident" I assure and he nods and we go down the street. Zealand didn't seem as excited and I tried to cheer him up by saying he looked very cute in his little costume and he was going to get lots of candy, but he wasn't into it.
We went around the neighborhood and picked up some candy. Zealand saw a few of his friends from school and they waved to him, but he was too sad to wave back and just walked past them.
"Come on Z, don't be rude, wave back" I tell him. He looks up at me
"I told them I was gonna be a dinosaur, but now I'm not" he tells me and I roll my eyes
"They don't care what you are, they are just being polite and waving and you should too" I say and he looks down. We walk around some more and we see one of Zealand's friend, Riley, who was wearing the same dinosaur costume that Zealand was gonna wear. Riley walks over to him
"Hey Zealand" Riley says and Zealand looks at his costume
"I was supposed to wear that" Zealand says and Riley shrugs
"Why didn't you?" He asks him and Zealand looks down
"It broke" he says, sadly
"Oh" Riley says and Zealand looks up
"Can I have yours?" Zealand asks
"No Zealand, you have your own" I tell him and he ignores me
"Please?" He asks Riley and Riley gets defensive
"No, this is mine" Riley says, hugging himself
"I'll give you mine" Zealand says and Riley pouts
"No way Jose" Riley says and Zealand stomps his foot
"I want to be a dinosaur!" He yells and Riley walks away "hey, come back and give me your costume!" Zealand yells at Riley and Riley keeps walking. Zealand throws a tantrum on the dirty sidewalk and everyone stares. I give a Haven to Nolan and I pick Zealand up off the ground and walk home, while Zealand kicks and screams.
When we get home, I put Zealand in a chair against the wall and he pouts. I give Haven some dinner of leftover chicken nugget pieces and then Nolan runs her a bath and I get her costume off. Nolan comes into the room and gets Haven and carries my naked baby into the bathroom. I sit down on the couch next to where Zealand was sitting.
"Why did you throw a fit outside?" I ask him and he doesn't move. He was just sitting there with his arms crossed
"I wanted Riley's costume" he finally tells me
"But that was Riley's, not yours" I remind him and he looks at me
"Mine was broken" he tells me and I nod
"I know that, but that doesn't mean you steal someone else's" I tell him and he nods
"I know Mommy, I was just mad" he admits
"I know you were mad, but you don't throw fits because it doesn't make anything better" I tell him
"I'm sorry" he says in a low voice and I smile
"I forgive you" I say and for the first time, he faces me
"You do?" He asks "but I did bad" he adds
"I still forgive you because you said sorry and I know you meant it" I tell him
"Oh" he looks down "so can I play now?" He asks and I look up
"First, eat dinner and get out of your costume, then yes" I tell him and he smiles
"Mommy?" He asks
"Yes, prince?" I say and he hugs me
"I love you, Mommy" he says and I hug back
"I love you, my son" I say back. All of a sudden, Nolan comes out with Haven on his shoulders. I laugh
"This munchkin made a big mess in your bathroom" he says and I roll my eyes
"I bet she did" I say and he looks up at Haven, who was giggling
"Ok ok, I had something to do with it too" he admits and I laugh
"Wouldnt doubt it" I laugh and he gets Haven off his shoulders and puts her on the floor, she starts playing with her toys and I put Blippi on TV for her to watch and then I warm-up some chicken nuggets for Zealand.
After he eats, I run him a bath while Nolan watches Haven and keep her entertained, which is his favorite thing to do. Like I said, an unbreakable bond is between them. Cutest. Duo. Ever.
After Zealand's bath, I give Haven a bottle and put her to bed. Zealand says goodbye to Nolan and after he leaves, I put Zealand to bed too.
