A couple days later, June 4th
Claire's POV
I woke up before both the kids. I rolled over and checked the time... 7:30. I got up and got dressed and brought Haven's gift down stairs. Today was her birthday and I wanted it to be special.
Nolan came over at 8 to help me get ready and spend the day with Haven, which I knew she wanted, but they weren't awake up.
"Where's the birthday girl?" He asks as he comes in
"She's not up yet" I tell him
"Bummer" he says "it's every birthday it seems like" he adds and I agree
"Pretty much" I say. We go in Haven's room quietly and we watch her sleep
"She's so beautiful" he says, she rolls over in her crib and looks up at us "hey munchkin" he says and rubs her cheek. She flashes her famous cheeky smile at him... I never get smiles from her in the morning lol.
"Good morning birthday girl" I say and pick her up and she holds her arms out to Nolan and he grabs her from me
"Hey princess" he kisses her cheek and throws her in the air and catches her.
We go downstairs and Zealand was playing on the floor quietly. He looks at me
"Hi Mommy" he says and continues playing
"I didn't know you were awake" I say, sitting on the couch
"I know" he says, not looking at me
"Why didn't you tell me?" I ask him
"Because you were in sissy's room" he says "I didn't want to disturb you" he adds and I smile at him
"That's sweet, Zealand" I say and give him a hug and a kiss on the cheek.
I went to the kitchen and made the kids breakfast and started on Haven's cake. At around 11 to 12, my dad came over with Alice and Scott... And Charlotte? Charlotte came into my house with her 2 year old son August. Nolan and Haven come into the room.
"Hey guys" I say as I take the cake out of the oven
"Happy birthday Haven!" Alice and Scott say together and Haven smiles at them
"Aw, she smiled" Alice points out and I laugh
"Yeah, she does that often" I tell her and she bends down to Haven, who was holding Nolan's hand
"Hi baby" Alice says in a cutesy voice, making Haven uncomfortable... I could tell.
"Alice, Scott, Zealand's in the living room and he's ready to play with you" I tell them and they run off. I hug dad
"Good to see you again, Claire" he says and bends down to Haven "good to see you too, miss 2 year old" he says and Haven smiles shyly and just holds onto Nolan tightly
"She's still a little shy" I tell dad, in case he felt offended she wasn't smiling her cheeky smile at him
"That's ok" dad says and rubs Haven's tummy and stands up and stakes Nolan's hand "good to see you, son" dad says and Nolan nods
"Good to see you again too sir" Nolan says polity and dad laughs
"Just call me Dave" dad says and Nolan nods. Dad looks at Haven, then looks at Nolan "may I?" He asks and Nolan lets go of Haven's hand and dad picks her up "come on, sweet girl" dad says and takes her to the living room while Nolan follows behind.
I was alone with Charlotte and August. August looked like his mom for sure. He had blonde hair and light blue eyes that were very pretty. He was definitely shorter than Zealand, but surprisingly was shorter than Haven even though he was older than her. I looked at Charlotte
"Glad you could make it" I say, it was kinda awkward. All I could hear was the kids in the other room playing
"Yeah" Charlotte said "uncle Dave said he was coming and invited me and Auggie" she says and I nod to show I was listening "he said there would be kids here that August could play with" she says and laughs "I forgot you have a kid the same age as him" she adds and I nod
"I didn't realize you had a son" I say and she looks down at August, who was very quiet
"Yep, this is Mr. August Cole" she says and I bend down
"Hey buddy, do you wanna go play with the other kids?" I ask softly and he shyly nods and runs into the other room
"He's always this shy" Charlotte admits and I smile
"So is Zealand" I giggle and she does too
"Its been about 5 years since I last saw Zealand" Charlotte says "hows he been?" She asks and I shrug
"He's doing good" I say and she looks at me concerningly
"I heard your mom died... Right after your husband" she says "are you doing ok?" She asks and I look down
"Its hard, but I'm doing ok" I tell her, I look in the living room "they help me through it" I say and she looks in there too
"Hows Zealand taking it?" She asks and I look down again
"He was heartbroken, but ever since he met Nolan, he's been doing better" I tell her and she smiles
"That's good" she says softly
"I'm sorry if this is irrelevant, but who was August's father?" I ask, she just looked down and fell silent "I'm sorry" I say, she closed her eyes
"No, it's ok" she says and doesn't look at me
"I'll just be quiet" I say and go back to the kitchen
"Its ok" she tells me "its just not what I want to share right now" she says and I nod
"I understand" I say and she smiles
"Thank you" she sighs and I start frosting the cake.
I bring the cake to the living room while Charlotte follows and sit it on the table and I light it as soon as Nolan grabs Haven, who I knew was going to touch it. We start singing and then I show Haven how to blow out the candles and she catches on quick and blows our the second one. I cut the pieces and hand them out.
Zealand, Haven, Alice, Scott, and even August sit at the little table and me, Nolan, dad, and Charlotte sit at the bigger table and catch up. After we eat the cake, dad, Alice, Scott and Charlotte get ready to leave and August even hugs Zealand goodbye... They just met too and were already really good cousins.
After they leave, Haven opens her birthday present from me and Zealand which is the bouncy bumble bee I already told you guys in the last chapter. She opens Nolan's after, which was a new outfit and a little doll which she loved.
