Kgomotso was awake long before her alarm got a chance to rouse her out of bed and watched the first rays of daylight filter through the ombre curtains, which matched the duvet in Kamo's room. She chose to sleep in her sister's bed because of the orthopaedic mattress and was never going back to that cement based mattress in the guest bedroom.
She was surprised when Kamo left everything including her car in its designated parking space, when she moved into their new home after the traditional wedding. But that didn't make Kgomotso less determined to find something that would fit her from Kamo's wardrobe because she had impeccable taste, which still had to rub off on Kgomotso.
She'd been to their house a few times during the wedding preparations and her favourite room besides the kitchen with its shiny Gaggenau appliances was Kamo's walk-in-closet, which was styled to look like an upscale boutique. The shelves were decked with clothes, shoes and handbags from top to bottom, Lwazi's closet was half the size on the other side of the master bathroom.
It was Saturday and six days since she'd seen Anesu, yes she was counting because waiting for him was becoming unbearable and his absence made her heart grow fonder. She stared at the ceiling reluctant to get up and start her day, which entailed cleaning and tackling the mountain of laundry she's been putting off for two weeks.
The place wasn't a complete pigsty but the floors needed to be mopped and the layer of dust on the furniture wiped off. She never had to worry about such things when Kamo was around because their apartment was always spotless, but now that Kamo was gone that responsibility solely fell on her and she didn't want to hire help like her sister did.
If only she could travel back in time, back in his arms and feel his lips against hers just this once, her heart dangerously fluttered and her breathing grew uneven, thinking about his talented tongue. She would cherish those memories until her dying breath because she was certain no one would make her feel like he did.
She couldn't lie to herself anymore about her feelings for Anesu, they were clear, unchanging and grew stronger the longer they were apart. Yes, it didn't make sense but she was done trying to find a reasonable explanation for falling so fast and hard for him, because it didn't mean they were not true.
She reached for her phone and sighed when she spotted no message or missed call from him, she went to her contacts and her finger hovered over the dial button once she found his number. She closed her eyes and pressed it, waiting to hear the ringing tone.
Hi, you've reached Anesu Luthuli please leave your name & number after the tone and I'll get back to you.
"What the fuck!" She groaned out in frustration, kicking the sheet away from her legs as she fell back on the mattress.
Even the sound of his charming baritone failed to quell her anger and without warning stinging tears welled up in her eyes, and she was ready to kill him on sight. How could he get her so wound up to the point that he was all she thought about and then disappear like he was a figment of her imagination?
Argh! All men were the same and she was stupid to think he was different, and she was happy to find that out before she risked it all but it didn't hurt any less.
Foolish, foolish heart. Look at us now!
She sat up, slightly bending her head to allow the fleeting dizziness to pass, she longed for the comfort of food but she'd regret her decision after the third slice of cake, she always did it was nothing new. The only difference now was that her shame didn't push her to stick a finger down her throat.
Her ringtone pierced through the deadpan silence and she stared at the screen, hoping it was Anesu since it was a private number.
"Hello." She answered calmly.
