Chapter Twenty-Eight: The Flight in the Night

Aemond Targaryen

I sit next to my chamber door waiting to hear the footsteps of my guard on the other side. It has been a few hours since the sun had set, and I was impatiently waiting on the guard to change shifts. My back rests against the door as I wait.

Ever since Vhaela could not attend Helaena's wedding I knew I had to see her. I had to see if she was alright. Her letters grew more and more sullen over the year that has passed. It killed me to know she was living with people she hated.

I lightly lift my head up to the door and look up in frustration. I swear to the gods if this guard does not move soon. But before I could finish my thought the sound of footsteps stops me. I lean my ear up against the door and listen as I hear them walk away.

A smile soon forms on my lips, and I rush to pull on the hood of my cloak before quietly exiting my chamber. I look both ways making sure there is no one around. With that, I rush through the hallway and down the stairs.

At this late hour, the only people around were the guards patrolling the keep. I sneak around shifting my head frantically trying to see any guards. I find myself heading down the stairs to the dungeons and a sigh of relief escapes me.

I head down slowly and watch as the light from the keep slowly fades away from me. With the last torch on the wall, I reach up and grab it. The flames burn brightly with each step I take deeper into the dungeon.

I head over to an archway across the dungeon and walk through. With each step I take, I grow closer to a doorway and my smile brightens. I drop the torch on the ground and quickly open the door. Instantly I am met with the sound of waves crashing against the shore.

I rush out into the sand and look up to the night sky with little stars brightly emitting light. My breath slows down as I wait patiently. I close my eye and take a deep breath in and out. A sudden flap of wings pulls my attention.

Vhagar slowly descends onto the beach causing sand to go everywhere with the flap of her wings. I use my hand to cover my eye as I wait for her to come to a stop. I take a peek through my fingers to find her settling down.

With that, I rush over toward her and begin to climb up the rope that brings me up to her saddle. Once I adjust myself in the saddle, I grab the reins that connect to her mouth.

With a loud yell, I command in Valyrian "Soves Vhagar!" (Fly)

Vhagar obeys and lifts her giant wings from under the sand and begins to flap with all her might. Soon we are in the air and heading in the direction of Dragonstone. A smile blooms on my face at the thought of seeing Vhaela again.

My hands let go of the reigns and they spread out wide across mimicking Vhagar's wingspan. The wind pushes them backward with resistance, but I keep holding them out. My chin turns up and my eye slowly close at the feeling of being up in the air.
