Chapter Thirty-Five: The Gift
Vhaela Targaryen
The soft sand tickles my feet as I walk on the shoreline. With every step, I take my feet and immerse into the sand conforming around my feet. The crashing of the waves can easily be heard as they hit the bank of the sand before rushing back inward.
I let out a heavy breath as I take in the smell of salt and smoke. It always smelled of that on the island. No matter what part you were on. Whether it be inside the castle walls or at the shore itself the smell travels.
I turn to look as Tarik approaches me from the distance he has been keeping from me. I give him a bored expression as he stands next to me looking at the rolling waves.
"It is peaceful here." He says to me.
I say nothing to him and continue to stare out at the vast horizon. It certainly is a peaceful place to escape too. But he was slowly running it by trying to speak with me. I really had nothing to say to him.
Tarik then turns to look at me as he says, "It will get easier Vhaela."
This causes me to turn to look at him with my eyes narrowed. I did not want to hear that. Especially now. There was nothing in my life that would make it easier. He was simply just feeding me empty words. They didn't hold any truth.
I knew it.
He finally takes the hint to leave me alone and I watch as he gives a bow of his head before turning around and heading back to the spot he once was at. I turn my head back to the empty ocean and watch the tides roll in.
I slowly move myself to the ground and begin to remove my shoes. With a heavy sigh, I stick my feet in the sand and wait for the tide to come up to each of my toes. The cold water gives me a rush as it comes to meet my feet before fading away.
My fingers play with the sand as it soothes me. The texture is firm from the constant source of water that fills the sand. The sudden roar of dragons pulls my attention from the ocean and into the sky. There I find my father's dragon circling around.
His high-pitched cry echoes through the sky and I watch as his long neck wobbles through the sky. Then a sudden roar responds to him as I watch my stepmother's dragon come to him. The two dragons fly with each other soaring between the clouds.
My eyes narrow into a squint as I look and find a much smaller dragon flapping its wings trying to keep up with the bigger dragons. As I look closer, I can see its green scales and a heavy groan escapes from me as I realize it's Vermax, Jacaerys dragon.
The dragons weave between each other and let out soft roars as they fly. Then a sudden flash of black appears from the sky and my eyes widen drastically. It had to be the Cannibal with his scales as black as coal.
He soars through the sky in the direction of the three other dragons. As he nears closer, I watch as Vermax begins to immediately flee in the other direction. A small laugh escapes me from the dragon's action.
