Chapter Six: The Aftermath

Vhaela Targaryen

Suddenly I'm pulled off the ground and being dragged away from the entrance of the cave. I open my eyes and see a bunch of dragonkeepers surrounding Caraxes as he spews fire. Aemond is now being pulled to his feet and dragged away as well.

I glance one last time toward Caraxes who has since calmed himself and is only letting out a low grumble. My view of him is suddenly taken away by the dragonkeeper who is dragging me away. Aemond is right behind me with dragonkeepers surrounding us.

Their voices project through the hallway yelling in High Valyrian at us. But I was far too distracted to completely understand what they were saying. The main entrance to the dragon pit comes into view as well as the light from the sun.

My eyes squint trying to adjust to the brightness. The dragonkeepers keep ahold of Ameond and I and direct us back toward the castle. A frown forms on my face at the realization of getting caught sneaking in the dragon pit.

I go into a daze as the dragonkeepers lead us closer and closer to the castle entrance. I remain quiet and stare at the ground following the footsteps of the man in front of me. Aemond looks my way a couple of times, but I refuse to meet his eyes, embarrassed of what occurred.

I pull myself back together as the entrance of the throne room comes into view. This makes my heart start to race and my breathing rapid. Were we going to be brought in front of the king? Was he the one going to punish us?

The two guards stationed in front of the tall doors look at Aemond and I and open them. The both of us walk in with a pair of dragonkeeps on either side of us. I let out a sigh of relief when I don't see the king on the throne.

I finally spare a glance towards Aemond who was already looking in my direction and he gives me an assuring smile. His smile calms me down even more and I return a small one on my lips. But the heavy sound of rapid footsteps pulls my attention away from him.

My eyes widen in fear at the appearance of my father storming over towards us. His eyebrows are furrowed, and he spares a glance between the two of us before solely focusing on me. I feel a heavy gulp go down my throat at his stare.

In a low voice, he bites out to the dragonkeepers "What happened."

I could hear the dragonkeeper shuffle at the intensity of my father's stare as he responds slowly "They were caught sneaking in the dragonpit with Caraxes."

My father's eyes bulge wide, and his head moves to meet my stare. His eyes roam my body and hair which now contains a light grey dust from the ash of Caraxes flames.

"What in the gods were you thinking Vhaela!" He shouts at me.

I flinch back from his tone and look down at the floor not giving a response.
