Chapter Forty-Nine: The Beacon

Vhaela Targaryen

The sun shines through the window and my eyes tightly close together at the brightness. I heave out a sigh as I comb a brush through my hair. I knew that today was most likely going to be a long day. It was bound to be with the discussion of the heir to Driftmark.

I just hope it will be a quick affair so I can get back to catching up with Helaena. After we had found each other in the hallway she quickly swept me away to meet the twins. It was jarring to think that she was a mother now.

While I have been ruling Runestone she was here taking care of her and Aegon's children.

My body shivers at the thought of her and Aegon together. I swear to the gods when I come across him, he will be sorry. He was not even a father to them from what Helaena tells me. I could not fathom how he could not care to see them.

They are adorable.

My head then turns at the sound of a light knock at my door. I instantly move out of my chair and rush toward the door knowing who it already is. I yank open the door and find Helaena standing outside with a small smile.

I return it and swiftly move outside my chamber and hesitantly weave my arm with her own. She does not pull back or tense under my touch which allows me to relax as we walk down the hallway. We whisper to each other and talk as we head in the direction of the throne room.

Crowds of people gather along the sides of the hallways but at the sight of us part and cling to the sides. My eyes softly narrow at the lords and ladies here at the castle. I will never forget their stares and whispers when I was growing up. How uncomfortable they made me feel.

It was why I hated crowds.

I could still feel their judgmental eyes on me.

I shake my head softly, getting rid of the unpleasant thoughts in my mind. I find myself clinging closer to Helaena as we enter the throne room. A large crowd of people stands on either side creating a thin walkway directly toward the iron throne.

My breath hitches slightly at the sight of the great throne. Even after all these years, it was still memorizing to look at. It was incredible to think that Aegon the Conqueror had the throne constructed with the swords of his fallen enemies.

Toward the left of the throne, I find Aemond and Aegon staring at Helaena and me. My eyes harshly narrow towards Aegon's way, and I briefly direct my gaze toward Aemond before shifting it away. But I find my eyes slightly widening as I come to meet the hard stare of my father.

He stands with Rhaenyra by his side along with my stepbrothers and Rhaena. At the sight of me, she greets me with a soft smile and in return, I do the same. I move my eyes back to my father and see him narrowing his eyes toward Helaena.
