Chapter Forty-Three: A Dreamer's Mind

Helaena Targaryen

My soft steps travel lightly through the hallway. At the sight of my chamber door, I quickly hasten my steps. I open the door and instantly hear the sound of a soft giggle echoing through my room. A smile moves its way on my face at the sight of the twins.

Their little heads turn at the sound of my footsteps. I watch a beaming smile grow on Jaehaerys's face at the sight of me. My head tilts at his reaction to me as a soft smile lands on my lips. I turn to look at Jaehaera and she simply stares at me.

My smile does not fade at her lack of enthusiasm for my arrival. Ever since she was born, she did not show much emotion. I remember my mother hounding the grand maester for any answers as to why she acted this way.

He turned up with nothing.

But it did not bother me at all. I found her lack of emotion fascinating and somewhat comforting. I move closer to them and slowly make my way down on the ground with them. My eyes move upward as I find their nursemaid giving me a bow of her head.

I give her a soft, thin smile before looking back at my children. Their thin silver hair glows against their pale skin. My hand makes its way to Jaehaerys's hair, and I slowly run my finger through it. He lets out some soft-spoken incoherent words.

His left-hand moves up toward my face and I feel his six little fingers touch my eyebrows. His fingers move down and toward my eye and at that I close it to avoid him from poking it out. The nursemaid lets out a soft laugh as she watches us.

Jaehaery's six fingers were yet another subject my mother had brought up to the grand maester. He had sent an inquiry over to the Citadel for any answers. All they turned up with was to not cut off the finger for it could cause more harm than good.

Even if they had advised to cut it, I would have never allowed it. Jaehaerys is just fine how he is. He is my baby boy, and I would not allow anyone to harm him. Not while I am living.

I slowly move away from Jaehaerys and take his hand in my own and pull it away from my face. His eyebrows furrow in anger at me taking control of his hand. My smile goes blank on my face as I stare at him.

He looked exactly like Aegon.

Not that Aegon would know anything about it.

My eyes blink rapidly in thought before I let go of his hand. His mood instantly improves, and he goes back to playing with his sister. My eyes turn to the floor as I stare blankly as rapid thoughts rush through my head.

My hand moves to my hair, and I slightly tug at it hoping to have the voices quiet down. They don't listen and I feel my mouth turn into a tight frown. The tight pull of my hair starts to hurt but I don't let it stop me from letting go.
