Chapter Fifty: An Eventful Feast

Vhaela Targaryen

My shoes click against the floor of the hallway as I make my way to the dining room. Where we are forced into having a feast altogether per the king's demand. I have no idea why in the seven hells he thinks this is a good idea.

But it should nonetheless be entertaining.

Large crowds of people wander the hallways after the throne room incident. And as I walk about the castle I hear and see the whispers that commence at the sight of me. It causes a harsh expression to grow on my face.

It was maddening that after all this time that the lords and ladies could still not stop their incessant whispering. My eyes find an older woman whose eyes are on my own as she speaks softly to a nearby woman.

As I approach them, I suddenly stop in my place and turn my head toward the two.

"If you have something you wish to say. Speak up." I tell the two firmly.

Both their eyes widen at my words and their mouths open slightly at a loss for words. I simply raise my eyebrows at the two waiting patiently for anything they might have to say to me. To my face. But they alas stay quiet under my stare.

So, I say "Alright then."

I turn my head and gaze away from them and continue heading toward the dining room. Two guards stand on either side of the doorway and at the sight of me, they move to quickly open the door. I stand in front waiting patiently for it to fully open.

Once it does, I make my way into the room and climb up the small set of stairs leading up. My eyes instantly find my father's eyes directed at me as I move toward the direction of the table. I can feel almost everyone's eyes on me, and I clench my jaw tightly under their gaze.

Seeing my stepbrother and half-sister on one side of the table my eyes move to the other. I find Helaena seated in a chair with Aemond and Aegon hovering over her talking. Helaena notices my gaze and gives a soft smile before waving her hand over to me.

I spare a quick look at my father whose eyes have grown hard. A small smirk moves to appear on the side of my lips as I make my way to Helaena. She gives me a bright smile unaware of the silent insult I gave my father.

I grab a seat next to her and sit down with a heavy sigh. As I sit down, she instantly moves her hand to the armrest, careful not to touch me. Her eyes beam and dart between me and her mother.

She whispers to me, "Have you talked to Aemond?"

I give her a soft nod of my head before my eyes glance up to Aemond who stands with Aegon a few feet away from us. My eyes dart back to Helaena as my eyes connect with the one-eyed prince. I feel my breath hitch a bit at getting caught.

I then move to lean closer to her and whisper out "Yes. It was your mother that wrote the letter. She says she was trying to protect us. Trying to protect us from my father."
