Anna Binkovitz: On Being Left

On being left

A poem in two parts after Sharon Oltz

One

Everything is cold

The world outside with its January and early night

"I'm so excited for our date," you admit to your boyfriend as he walks you to his car. You rub your gloved hands together to conceal the warmth.

The sky is black at 5 P.M. due to the month being January.

"Yeah," Ashton sends a weak smile back.

My body

The skin you knew only as warm and naked

And you

Telling me that we

The ten month belly laugh

Are done now

Fading into only stomachache

And I'm staring at the glove compartment

Because we're in your car

Because you cannot face as you say this

"I'm breaking up with you," Ashton admits to you.

You sit in the passenger's seat, staring directly in front of you.

A dried stream of coffee in the middle of the glove box.

"I don't think we should be together. We're just so different."

Your head turns slightly to see Ashton as he tells you these words but he's not looking at you.

He's looking out the window towards the bare trees.
