Edwin Bodney: When a Boy Tells You He Loves You

When a boy tells you he loves you

It'll be the first time you hear this

It is late

And he isn't even there to tell you this in person

But instead on a car ride home from a bar in Chicago he is there on business

And of course you will smile

Because he sounds like he means it

Because you believe him

"What are you doing right now?" You ask your boyfriend of five months, curled up on the couch.

You watch the flickering stars in the black night sky.

"I'm going back to the hotel with the lads, we just went to the bar," Calum responds through the iPhone held to your ear. "What are you doing?"

"Just scrolling through Tumblr and talking to you," you reply, your eyes flickering back to your laptop screen.

"Wait isn't it like one A.M. there?" Calum asks surprised.

"Yeah."

"Get some sleep, silly," Calum lets out a laugh.

"Alright. Goodnight Calum," you let a yawn slip past your lips.

"Goodnight Y/N. I love you."

You smile genuinely, responding back with, "I love you too."

You fall asleep perfectly.

Because a boy has never handed those words to you like crushed blackberries in the palms of his hands firm

Young

Full

Waiting to taste sweet with you

His arms creeping vines

Begging to touch the sun
