Cyrus's POV
My plan to avoid my mother was flushed down the drain because of the new development. I had no choice but to call my mother and sister and share the good news with them. Unfortunately, I didn't time the situation correctly and called her at the wrong time. Mom had summoned a meeting with the entire pack and answered the call there. Thanks to their wolf hearing, they all heard that I'd found my mate so I couldn't tell her the whole story.
The phone rest on the dashboard of my car for her voice was loud enough to be called a speaker. She was speaking with so much excitement that I wasn't sure how to tell her about the stupid stunt I pulled off. As usual, she was already planning the Luna ritual and thinking about baby names. It's only been an hour since I told her. I wasn't even sure why I told her in the first place. I should have kept it a secret from the woman. Maybe a big part of me wanted her to know that the son she seemed cursed to never find his mate has finally found her.
"Mom, can you go somewhere private with Cyra? I need to speak to the two of you alone," I asked politely with an extra, super polite tone. Surprisingly, she agreed with a squeal and did leave. I exhaled with relief as I heard her feet rush away from the crowd with Cyra mumbling and cussing behind her. I'm not sure what her problem was and I didn't bother to ask. "Are you alone now?"
"Yes, what is it?" Cyra asked.
"The lady in question is Mindy's friend," I repeated what I'd already told them. I intentionally paused. Neither mom nor Cyra liked the concept of a human mate. Not that they had shown deep repulsion towards it, they just never thought it was a good idea for a werewolf to be mated to a human, especially if the werewolf is an alpha. I bit down on my lower lip. I didn't know what their reaction would be. Arabel didn't look like a woman who would swallow criticism and abuse just like that. She looked more like a ‘misbehave and I'll dump your ass even if I love you’ kind of woman. Sure, you can't judge a book by its cover but isn't being extra careful worth it?
"Cyrus, what's wrong?" Cyra asked worriedly, detecting the concern in my voice and of course, the pause. "Is your mate okay? Is she crippled or something… wait," she gasped with an outrageous tone, "is she a he?"
"What?! No! It's a she, I'm sure the person I saw is a woman! It's not that at all. The thing is that she's human, an ordinary human,"
"Oh," mom and Cyra simultaneously said. Their tone was unclear. I wasn't sure if they were disappointed or shocked, their tone was blank and well, empty. Even if they end up not liking Arabel, I would still make her my mate. I've waited for so long and I wasn't foolish enough to throw away my blessing just because it has a little stain on it. Other alphas had human mates and although it was dangerous, they were still living happily. All I had to do was make sure she was perfectly protected and I'll be fine. "Oh well, a half loaf of bread is better than none," Cyra suddenly said, breaking the silence. The next thing I heard was a loud smack and Cyra's painful cry. "Why?!" She hollered.
"Don't call your brother's mate half! Whether she's a human, a witch, or even an ogre, she is the woman the goddess deemed worthy for him so there must be a reason. I haven't met her yet but I already love her. Human or not, she's going to wipe the shame your brother's matelessness is causing the pack! That is all that should matter!” Kent wagged his tail happily hearing our mother defend us. It was one of those super rare moments. I didn't expect her to express her gratitude and approval so quickly. I thought she'd blow a fuse and Cyra thought about that too because she muttered a "wow".
"Thank you, mom. I didn't expect this but thanks," I smiled, then my smile froze on my face as I remembered the other stupid thing I did. Unfortunately, Cyra knew me too well and snorted following the silence from me. She figured it out.
