Chapter 48 - The Wrong Body

A/N: I rewrote chapter 48. Otherwise, I won't get any further with this story. 

Days after their marriage and after Yibo had started his agent training, where Zhan is one of his instructors, the two received a call from Zhan's boss asking them to come to his office immediately because there was news in the case of the politician's assassination. Just an hour after the call, the two were in the boss's office listening to the news in amazement.

"What I'm about to tell you is subject to the strictest secrecy. I only found out about it in the morning, too. I don't know why they took so long to inform me. All right, then, I'll get started. Nobody knows how this could have happened, but the politician's body has been exchanged between the crime scene and the forensics department. At the coroner's office, the pathologist was about to start the autopsy when he realized he had the wrong body on the table. Immediately, a search was made for the right body, but the politician's body had disappeared. Moreover, it was impossible to find out who had brought the body. Since it was not one of the usual corpse drivers and he had given a false name. And the body of the dead driver also disappeared." Explained the boss.

"Wait a minute. Who would have anything to gain from stealing the bodies of these two men?" Yibo asked, confused.

"I guess nobody." Replied the boss.

"How sure is it that the bodies were really the politician and his driver?" Wanted to know Zhan.

"Good question ZhanZhan." Said Yibo with a grin.

"I know you two are newlyweds and make love all the time. But let's focus on the case now, please." Reminded the boss.

"Yes, sir." Zhan and Yibo replied at the same time, grinning.

"So according to our information, the politician and his driver were identified at the scene by a police officer. Moreover, the two had identity documents with them that identified them as the two of them." Explained the boss.

"That means only this police officer identified the two? Who was the police officer and has he been questioned yet?" Wanted to know Zhan.

Boss: "Here's another mystery. No one knows who the police officer was."

Yibo: "How come I already knew you were going to say that?"

Zhan: "So in short, we are back to square one. Nobody knows who the police officer was. No one knows if the bodies were really those of the politician and the driver. No one knows who the corpse driver was and whether he might have switched the bodies. And if he did, why did he do it?"

Boss: "Yes, that's about it."

Zhan: "What else is missing?"

Boss: "The politician's wife left the country shortly after she was informed of her husband's death. And because she still has Political Immunity, we can't just follow her and arrest her either."

Yibo: "So she grabbed her son and took off?"

Boss: "She didn't take her son. He's with her brother right now. And she told him that she has to take care of important business where she can't take the boy."

Yibo: "What kind of mother is she? Her son had been kidnapped and soon after she leaves him alone again?"

Zhan; "Think about it, they sent the boy to a boarding school in London. They're used to not having him with them. Maybe he would have just been in their way with the political commitments and all the illegal business."

Boss: "You're right. But this isn't about the son right now. This is about much more."

Yibo: "Yeah, sure sir, I was just interested. So sir, what now? Should we restart the investigation?"
