"It's been two months guys. Two. Months. And she hasn't spoken to me once. I really fucked up." Remus sat in his room complaining with the Marauders.
"Dorcas said she was just going through a spout of depression. I'm sure it's nothing about you." James explained, knowing the real truth.
Adeline had been avoiding all group events since the third day of school. She won't go to meals. If she sees them in the library she'll turn and leave. She'll go to class but keep her head down and not respond to anyone. She's gone full hermit with the exception of Dorcas and James. The latter of which no one knows about.
"I get that. I do. But she wouldn't even give me my potion. She had Dorcas do it. I get everyone's depression is different, but how can she work on a 6 hour potion, but can't hand it to me?" Remus asked.
"You know you can't think like that Moony." Sirius said having experienced depression of his own.
"I know. I'm being selfish. We've just been in good place over the summer and now it's all gone to shit."
"Why don't you focus instead on finding a date to the Halloween party." Sirius suggested.
"A date? We've never done dates before."
"Well Prongs wants to take Lily. Mary asked Wormy to take her since Emmeline is graduated. And I have to decide yet which of my invitations to accept." Sirius said that last part with a smirk.
"So now I have to find a date. Wonderful."
"I'm sure Dorcas would deliver a note to Zipline if you wanted to ask her." James suggested nonchalantly.
Remus shook his head, "She hates parties. That would just be rude of me to try and make her. Someone else surely doesn't have a date."
"Well Halloween is tomorrow Moony. But I can tell my leftovers to come looking for you." Sirius said with a wink.
**************
Adeline had knitted ten sweaters in the last two months. All she did was homework and knit and occasionally have Dorcas over. She was going stir crazy. In a moment of insanity she decided she was going to go on a walk. Risking running into Remus or one of her other friends. Any of them could take one look at her and tell that she is not depressed, just a coward.
Adeline picked up Mercury, who was playing with her ball of yarn, and headed outside. She made sure to stay on the side furthest from the Gryffindor tower, so they couldn't see her out of the window.
The fresh air was doing wonders for Adeline who only ever went outside anymore for Herbology, but even then it was in a greenhouse.
"Disgusting mudblood, just walking around campus like she owns it."
Adeline kept walking with her eyes forward, not daring to look at the source of the sound.
"She thinks she too good to look at us. Someone with such filthy blood should know better to ignore us."
Adeline was stopped in her tracks by three Slytherin boys.
Evan Rosier, Barty Crouch Jr., and Regulus Black. Evan and Barty were in her year, but she knew Regulus was younger than her, not sure by how much.
"Don't you know it's rude to ignore people-mudblood."
Adeline decided to feed into the dumb naive girl stereotype, "Oh I'm so sorry. I didn't know you were talking to me. I thought someone had the last name Mudflood. I was in my own little world." She said sweetly, just trying to get out of the situation.
