As the end of September approached, Adeline's mood skyrocketed. She began to go out more with friends (in part because of Monty's birthday gift) and she began knitting again.
But as the end of September got closer and closer, Adeline's excitement turned to fear.
"What if something happened? Dumbledore sure as Hell wouldn't have told me. And why didn't I get a specific date for his return, just 'in three months' because three months is technically today and I don't see him waltzing in the front door." Adeline paced across her apartment as Dorcas and Marlene laid across the couch.
"I'm sure he'll be here soon babes." Dorcas said reassuringly.
"But I don't even know how long he'll be back!" Adeline whined as she continued her pacing.
"Wait he's leaving again?" Marlene asked. The two girls still did not know the contents of Remus' mission, nor that he was even a werewolf. It had gotten a lot easier to hide his secret thanks to Adeline's potion making him less tired and injured after Full Moons.
"Yep. As far as I'm aware at least. All they had said he would leave on his mission for three months at a time. So he could literally just come back for a day. Or just an hour. I'm completely in the dark about everything and I hate it."
"Have you talked to Dumbledore about why you aren't invited to meetings anymore?" Dorcas asked sympathetically.
"No and I don't plan to. He's probably got some fucked up reason and I don't want to go to him and hear his fake wisdom that's really just a weak ass metaphor."
"Damn maybe that attitude is why you aren't invited." Marlene teased.
Adeline rolled her eyes at Marlene's comment, "How have your roles been though? Everything smooth?"
"Had a few rough outreach missions. We were with Lily and James during one and barely escaped Voldemort." Dorcas explained with a chill entering her body at the memory.
"That's the second time Lily and James have encountered him in three months. That's insane." Adeline could not believed that they managed to defy Voldemort not only once, but twice.
"It is. I hadn't expected him to be so involved. I figured he'd just pull the strings in the background." Marlene said shifting in discomfort as she recalled the memory as well.
Kind of like Dumbledore is doing."I'm just glad you're both safe. I couldn't bare to see anything happen to you."
"We've been very cautious, and Dumbledore keeps all of our missions pretty secret to make things even safer." Dorcas reassured her.
"I feel like keeping everything too secret is a recipe for disaster though. We should feel able to trust each other." Adeline said thoughtfully.
"Yeah but if someone wasn't trustworthy then they would know all our secrets." Marlene pointed out.
"Like that Fletcher guy. He feels so sketchy." Dorcas suggested.
"Wait Fletcher? As in Mundungus?" Adeline asked in shock, hoping they would say 'no a different Fletcher.'
"Yeah that's the guy. How do you know him?" Dorcas asked suspiciously. They knew Adeline had friends in low places, but they didn't think she'd associate with someone like him.
"He hangs out as Hog's Head. Tried selling me a cursed necklace once. Would've bought it if Aberforth hadn't stepped in."
"Oh! Aberforth has joined as well." Marlene added.
"He has? He hates Dumbledore. He would never willingly follow him."
"They seem to be working like equals." Dorcas said thinking back to their past meeting that had the brothers standing side by side.
