You knew it would happen soon, you just hoped it wouldn't be this soon.

You finish burying Old Danny the dog under his favorite tree. Already missing his sweet brown eyes. You take out your phone and call your best friend Hunter. Again it goes to voice mail. The pain is too much, and you have no one else to talk to about it. 'Why isn't he picking up?' You shoot him a quick text, telling him where you'll be and why.

You start walking down to the lake by your house, there is a slight breeze this evening but for now it still feels warm. You walk to the water and wade in, ignoring the sharp coldness that the water provides. Within 5 minutes you can't feel your toes. Slowly you wade around and then back to shore, grateful for the pain in your feet. It shows you can still feel things, you feel numb. You settle down on the grass and curl up into a ball. Hoping Hunter will get your message.

"Hey, I got here as fast as I could." His voice sounds over your shoulder.

You turn and try to stand, feet still numb from the water, you start to fall. He catches you and then the tears start. You cry into his shoulder.

He holds you close as you cry, "It's going to be okay." He keeps murmuring calming things into your ear to help you calm down along with rubbing your back. "He's in a better place, promise."

You sniffle and nod, he wiped your eyes. "Let's think of some good memories about him huh?"

You lay your head on his shoulder, "Well there is where he'd wake me up every morning with his nose on my hand.."

"Then if he didn't get you up he'd let me in the house to wake you up!" Hunter chuckles and you laugh softly. You sigh, "I'm gonna miss him so much."

"I know, but those memories can't be taken away from you. Just remember that."

At that moment you start to hiccup, painful, gut-wrenching hiccups. "I just-hic... and-hic..." You stop and try to get them under control. Hunter chuckles a little. "It's not-hic... funny-hic..."

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry," Hunter continues to laugh, a little stronger now.

You reach over and shove him. "Don't just-hic... sit there, hic... help me! Hic"

"What can I do?"

"Hic... I don't know-hic... surprise me."

"Alright but you asked for it."

Instead of standing up or moving away though he closes the space between you two and connects his lips with yours.

You are shocked but nonetheless kiss back, the kiss seems to last hours to you because it was like time stopped right then and there. When the both of you broke away, he scratched his neck nervously. You couldn't help but smile.

"I've been wanting to do that, I'm sorry if I.."

"No apologies needed. If you didn't notice, I kissed you back."

He smiles and kisses you softly, "So...what does this mean?"

You giggle breaking away, "My hiccups are gone."

He chuckles, "I know that, crazy."

"Well, I was thinking now we're together.."

"Wouldn't have it any other way." and with that, he kisses you softly as the sun set.
