Work was stressful. You unlock the front door and are nearly bowled over as Cole rushes out and starts running in circles around you, wagging his tail and trying to jump on you. "Cole, please. Mommy's got a headache." You walk into the house and find it in disarray, it appears Cole found a package of paper towels and he tore them to shreds. You sigh and start to clean up the mess as a car door slams and Hunter storms through the door and slams that one as well.
"Boy what a day!" He shouts.
You wince at your husband's loud voice and try to stay calm. "Bad day?" You ask, trying to be supportive.
"The worst! You won't believe-"
"Hunter can you keep your voice down, my head is pounding."
He gives you a sharp look, not seeming to notice that you're on your hands and knees cleaning up after HIS dog.
He looks at you sternly, "You don't know the half of a bad day. I've got record executive directors asking everything about the album I haven't even started yet. My writing sessions were a bust. Dan's calling me about playing at Ash's anniversary party Saturday night. The recordings we did all last week were lost..." He rambles on and on and his voice raises.
Your head pounds, "Shut up, Hunter! The world doesn't revolve around you!" You snap.
"Excuse me?" Hunter's voice stays calm but you can clearly hear the anger behind it.
"You heard me! I'm sick and tired of everything always being about you and your music! I have a life too, beyond listening to you whine!"
Hunter stares at you for a few seconds and you stand, trying to stop the tears that stream down your face. "You know what? I'm done! Clean up after your animal, I'm going to take a shower!" You storm upstairs with extra force in your step. Up in your room you angrily undress and throw your clothes down with force. Then you hear heavy footsteps on the stairs. Hastily you throw on your summer bathrobe and open the door. Hunter stands there, he was going to walk in but you yanked the door open first. He looks completely mad, you calculate the short distance between you and the bathroom. But Hunter blocks your path.
"Move." You say sternly.
"No.
" "Move!"
"No!" You shove him back a little and move into the bathroom before he can react.
He pounds on the door and you change. "(Y/n)! Come out!" It sends a flashback though your mind from your past. Your previous boyfriend had been abusive and you knew Hunter knew it. Together with him pounding on the door and your bad day, it's too much. You sit yourself down against the tub, burying your face in your hands, sobbing.
Hunter hears your sobs, he must. He stops pounding. "(Y/n) open up I just want to talk."
"Go away!" You yell, fear clear in your voice.
"Please (y/n) I forgot myself, I'm not Trevor."
"I can't tell the difference right about now!" You holler. "(Y/n) please."
"If you're really not like Trevor them you'll leave me alone!"
"Fine!" Hunter gives up. "I'm going out for some space." You hear him retreating and then the sound of the car motor reaches your ears.
You thought having him leave would make things better, but you are left with a hollow feeling in your gut. 'What if he never comes home?' The thought scares you into a fresh batch of tears. You never should have yelled.
You walk out of the bathroom wiping your eyes and looking around, everything making you feel more guilt. You walk downstairs and outside on the porch, Cole following you. You sat on the steps, Cole putting his head in your lap. You wait to see if he'll come home. Soon enough it turns dark and no sign of Hunter. The breeze makes you cold but you stay outside. Soon enough you fall into a light sleep and a few minutes later, or so it seems, you feel something wrapping around your shoulders.
You start, awake and suddenly very confused. Cole no longer sits by your side and when you squint into the night you see a form in front of you wrapping a blanket around your upper body. "Hunter?" You mumble.
"Shh." You feel yourself being lifted and then slowly carried.
"I can do it, let me walk."
He doesn't listen and soon you feel yourself being settled into bed. You snuggle into the pillow and sigh, plunging into a deep sleep. Hopefully this will get rid of your headache... Something wakes you up, it's the absence on the other side of the bed. Hunter isn't on tour or anything.. Where is he? You get up and look at the clock, it's well past 3! You feel for the door knob and carefully descend the stairs. "Hunter?" You say softly into the dark.
You see his body laying on the couch. He's asleep or so it appears. You walk over cutting on a lamp to give you a little light and to see his face. His chest rises up and down slowly and his eyes are closed. A notepad is laying on his chest and his hand rests on it with a pen dangling from his fingertips. You smile softly and walk over taking the pen and pad carefully and he mumbles in his sleep. You look at the pad seeing his familiar scrawl, the title jumping out at you. ''Careful." You whisper seeing the lyrics talking about being careful with someone who had been broken. You kneel down by the couch, putting the pad on the table. You run a hand through his hair gently and press a kiss to his temple before covering him up.
In the morning you awaken to a soft knock on your open door. Hunter looks sheepish as he enters and sits gingerly on the edge of the bed. He stares at his hands and fiddles with his wedding band. "(Y/n)," Hunter looks at you briefly and back down. "I'm sorry. We both kind of let our anger get the better of us. I should have backed off when you first blew up."
Your heart bursts with love, pride, and guilt. Hunter didn't do anything but have a bad day, when he tried to tell you about it you overreacted instead of explaining why you weren't up for hearing about it. You sit up and reach for him at the end of the bed, taking his hand. "Hunter, I'm truly sorry, you didn't deserve my outburst."
"I just want you to know, my world isn't about me. It's about you, music, loving you has made me so happy. And I'm proud to call you my inspiration."
You smile at him, remembering the song you got a secret sneak peek of last night.
You raise up and hug him tightly, "I'm sorry.."
He holds you close, "I love you.."
"I love you too, Hunter." You lay your head on his shoulder and he moves to pull you into his lap. You toy with the necklace around his neck as you both sit in silence. His fingers thread though your hair and he presses light kisses on your forehead and nose. Neither of you had to speak, you could feel the fight slipping from your mind like it hadn't happened at all.
You look up at him and he looks into your eyes, "I love you.." He takes your hand in his and places your fingers over his lips, kissing each one, then looking at the ring.
He runs his thumb over it and then kisses the back of your hand before meeting your eyes again. "I love you..I adore you..I need you." With that, he presses a gentle kiss to your lips.
