Breaking up with Hunter seemed like the easiest thing. He simply stared into your eyes and accepted it. He was tired of fighting for you, he had put up with you long enough and you both knew it. But then why did it keep you awake at night? Why did you expect to see his face around every corner, hear his laughter at some random thought that popped into your mind. You pondered that as you walked your dog, Amber, through the park. Clouds darkened overhead and you picked up your pace, not wanting to get stuck in the rain. "Come on girl, let's go." You urge. Out of the corner of your eye you see something that stops you short. Hunter walking, hand in hand with a short and rather striking blond.
You hear the thunder and Amber gets off the leash, running off towards the direction of Hunter. You sigh exasperated and call her, "Amber!" You run off after her and find Hunter saying goodbye to the girl then see you. You swallow seeing Amber run up to him.
He crouched down and pet her, "Amber..?" You stop a few feet away and he looks up at you with those electric blue eyes, "Lose a dog?" You nod and bite your lip, walking over to them. You reattach the leash and feel rain start to sprinkle then pour from the sky. You squeal, Hunter chuckles, "You drive here?"
You shake your head, "Walked.."
"Well then, I'll walk you home." Hunter turns in the direction of your apartment building and before you can stop him he's in step beside you.
"You know Hunter, you wouldn't have to if you didn't want to."
A loud clap of thunder drowns out the end of your comment and Amber goes nuts. She yalps and runs around your legs, successfully tying you up.
"Amber shh. It's okay." You try to calm her down but she pulls on the leash and you feel yourself beginning to lose your balance.
"Carful there." Hunter reaches out and catches you in his arms.
"Thanks." You say breathlessly as you look up at him. At this moment it begins to pour and you hear a siren.
You swallow hard, "That's the tornado warning siren.."
Hunter untangles you from the leash. You are completely terrified of tornados and your eyes are wide. "Calm down..let's get to your apartment." He picks Amber up and hurries with you to your apartment. You let the both of you in and you're already in panic mode as you see the wind pick up outside. Hunter takes you into his arms, "Shh..it's okay. We'll be okay." You look at him and then hug him tightly.
After a minute you release him and run to grab the mattress off of your bed. Hunter sees what you are doing and helps. You get the bed into the bathroom and Hunter props it up so you can get in the tub with a few blankets and your dog. Then he gets in and pulls the heavy padding over the both of you. You are shaking and Amber twitches to escape.
"Here." Hunter takes her in one hand and grabs you in the other, hugging you tightly around the shoulders. "It's going to be alright." He says.
You whimper and can feel tears rolling down your cheeks. "..I'm sorry.." At this point in time you're scared to death and the chance of you dying, you think it's right around the corner.
"What? Why are you sorry...?"
"...I didn't want to see you exhausted from fighting with me anymore.."
"wait...What are you saying?..Are you saying what I think you're saying?"
You nod, still shaking in his arms, "I still love you. I am enough trouble than what it's worth though...You deserved someone better and you found them...and I'm just sorry.." He pulls you close and holds you tightly.
"I never thought it would hurt so much to see you with someone else." You mutter into his shoulder.
"I wish I would have realized." He says a little overwhelmed.
