(Hunter's POV)
Another late night in the studio, another pot of coffee burned through. I sent everyone else home, it wasn't worth it to keep them here. I bury my head in my hands. 'You promised yourself Hayes, no more tears.' The accident was over a year ago and it still felt fresh. She was so young, so full of life. I wish I would have realized how special she was when she was alive. Now she's gone and it wasn't until her sister gave me the diary she kept from the year she worked in Nashville that I found out she liked me back, I always just thought I had all the time in the world.
"Hey, you okay?" (Y/n) stands in the doorway, cautiously peeking in. She hasn't been working here long but she seems confident and happy here. I'm so glad, spending a lot of time in the studio late at night has gotten me well aquatinted with the janitorial staff. "Yeah, I'm fine. Come on in." She smiles and wheels the vacuum in, as she starts it up she begins to hum, I think she'd sing if I wasn't here, the thought makes me smile.
(Your POV)
You can tell that Hunter is still upset. You had overheard from his band members about the accident. You felt bad for him and you wish you could do something for him. You look at him as he bends over the sound board, head in his hands. You swallow and cut the vacuum off, heading to where your stuff is. You pulled a small white box out and look at the clock. You smile, walking back into the studio Hunter is in. He probably has no idea it's his birthday in one minute. Maybe the two cupcakes in the box would cheer him up..a little bit.
(Hunter's POV)
(Y/n) walked out suddenly, the lack of noise makes my ears ring and I wonder what's going on. I scrub my hands over my eyes and blink several times at the floor, vision blurry from the lack of sleep and dryness of being all cried out.
"Hey Hunter?"
I look up, (y/n) stands off to the side of my chair, her hands behind her back.
"Oh I'm sorry." I start to stand.
"No, your fine." She shakes her head and I sit.
"I was um... Wondering if..." She cuts off, looking uncertain all of a sudden.
"What?" I stare into her soft eyes and hope I don't look like too much of a mess.
"Well, this is for you." She shoves a box into my hands an mumbles something quickly that ends with 'day' then she bolts from the room, dragging the vacuum behind her. I stare uncomprehendingly at the package.
(Your POV)
You hurry out the room. It's his attractiveness, you swear. Okay..maybe it's all of him. You've developed feelings for Hunter, but he's still upset about the accident. Which is understandable, you'd be distraught too. Though, you knew nothing could come from crying. It wouldn't bring her back as much as you wish you could so Hunter could be happy. You'd give anything to make Hunter happy...even if it wasn't being with you. You hoped he liked his birthday surprise. You didn't want to look stupid in front of him.
(Hunter's POV)
I run down the hall, trying to remember where the cleaning room is, peeking in each door to see if she's there. I must have scared her off, the sweet girl who made me cupcakes, who knew what day it was even when I forgot. "(Y/n)!" I call softly, her name echoes off of the walls and comes back to me. I see a light switch off and then another. She's at the front of the building, turning off the lights. I race up to where the switches are. She stands there in a light jacket, her hair messy from the work and her eyes tired. I say her name and she sees me. "You weren't going to leave without letting me say thank you were you?"
(Your POV)
You blush as he stands across from you. "Thank you.." he murmurs and you smile softly, putting your hands in your pockets.
"It's nothing really..It's a day to be celebrated. Anything to make you smile." You look down and brush a stand of hair behind your ear. You were happy that he liked the cupcakes. Nothing says happy birthday without cake. Plus, standing here and seeing him smile is totally worth any late night baking sessions.
