The main drag is pretty deserted after the movie, just teenagers trying to have a good time and a few late night stragglers getting home from work. As you pull up to a stop light the car next to you starts to shout and wave and you realize it's several of your old schoolmates, the guy driving was the prom king and an old crush of yours, he's been back for the summer and you've done an excellent job of avoiding him until now. The way he looks at first you and then Hunter makes you nervous. "Hey! Wanna see what that thing can really do?" He yells to Hunter through the open windows.
Hunter looks over at you in wonder and confusion.
"He's challenging you to a race."
"Well then." Hunter's face breaks out into a grin. "Thought so."
"Hunter no, it's illegal."
"Oh, come on, babe. We've got to be a little crazy sometimes." He winks at you and yells to your old crush, "Race to where?"
"The old cotton gin." He smirks and you know there's two ways to get to the gin. The main highway and cutting through the river bottoms or deer stalk road which was a dirt road with many twists and turns and paths to a gravel road to the gin.
You look at Hunter, "We really shouldn't do this." You say with worry in your voice.
"Oh come on, (Y/n). Don't be a chicken!" Your old classmates imitate chicken noises and it feels like you were in high school again. "We're gonna race."
"Okay..when the red light turns!" You look at the light and swallow hard, hoping time went slow.
Both vehicles rev up and you check to make sure both you and Hunter have your seat belts fastened. "Bad idea... Bad idea... Bad-"
"(Y/n)," Hunter cuts you off, "don't worry, we've got this... You do know how to get to the-"
"Yes! I've only lived here my whole." You shoot back at him.
The light glows green on your skin as it changes and you are thrown back in your seat as Hunter speeds forward.
"Tell me when to turn!" He focuses on the dark road and the position of the other car.
You know that soon the road is going to branch off and you have to choose which way to go, off-road or playing it safe... And what is the other car going to do?"
Hunter sees the fork. "(Y/n), which way?"
"Le-RIGHT?"
You gasp as he hurries down the highway and he looks at you, "Why are you freaking out so bad? It's just the highway.." You look in the rearview and see them going down the dirt path.
You cling to your seat, "Either way is dangerous..especially this time at night. They're going through the woods straight off..ours is a little delayed."
"What do you mean delayed..?"
"We're going through the river bottoms and deer are out and we-"
"we'll be fine..how close does the road get to the river.."
"Depends." He's got a gleam in his eyes as the headlights hit the wooded area in front of you.
"So, what's the story?" He asks.
"What?"
"With that guy driving the other car."
"Oh... Don't talk, focus on the road!" You clutch the handle on the door and peer out, looking for deer.
"(Y/n)..." Hunter says in a warning tone.
"Oh, and just a warning, there's going to be a lot of people seeing you win or lose this thing... In the summer the cotton gin is one continuous party."
