Hunter was supposed to get back into town today and the girls were excited to see their daddy. Elizabeth Lynette was five years old, very much used to seeing daddy leave but didn't like it one bit, well until she saw him onstage. She had a musical side that was growing about as big as Hunter's. Little Claire Marie was one and a half, she also showed that she was a daddy's girl and fell in his musical footsteps, banging on toy drums and toy xylophones, stopping whatever she was doing to hear daddy on the radio. You got them in the car and drove to get breakfast where Hunter would meet you and surprise the girls. McDonalds wasn't your first choice but the girls, or rather Elizabeth begged and begged until you finally gave in.
You called Hunter this morning and told him where you would be. In the car you turn on Hunter's latest album. The girls scream for you to skip the song it's on because that's the one their daddy wrote them to sing them to sleep by. Elizabeth very matter of factly reminds you that it is am not pm. You smile and switch to the next song. Claire gurgles along with the words and Elizabeth starts pretending to dance in her car seat.
While you unload the girls in the parking lot you keep your eye on Claire, she's gotten into the habit of running off. You also keep an eye out for Hunter, he isn't here yet. Inside, you order the French toast sticks and breakfast hashbrowns, you order just a coffee for yourself, seeing Hunter after such a long time still makes you nervous with excitement each time.
Settling into a booth, Elizabeth makes a great show of explaining to Claire why mommy gets to decide what they eat for breakfast. You laugh right along with Claire. Your eye catches the form of someone walking into the restaurant, Hunter's here!
You smile but try not to give him away as he makes his way over, Starbucks in his hand. That man could never do anything without coffee.
Elizabeth gets your attention, "Mommy? Why hasn't daddy called?" Hunter had a habit of calling every morning he was away, it was the next best thing of having him there at breakfast.
You smiled softly, "Maybe he's busy this morning. You know he'll call when he can, baby."
She nods, "I miss him a lot."
"I know, baby."
"I wish he was here." Hunter was close enough to hearing them as he stood behind the booth where they were sitting. You smiled and nodded at him.
"Did someone wish for daddy?" He said moving around the booth to face them.
Elizabeth's eyes widened along with Claire's, "Daddy!"
Hunter picks up Claire and swings her around while Elizabeth struggles to get down from the booth. He puts Claire down and picks up Elizabeth, you smile and laugh as Hunter dances around with her to the music playing over the restaurant speakers. Then he sits both girls back in the booth. "Hi honey." He kisses you and you have a moment of pure happiness before Elizabeth shrieks "EWW KISSING GROSS!"
You laugh against Hunter's lips.
"Missed you." He whispers before he falls into the seat next to you.
"Did you bring us anything?" Elizabeth gets right down to business.
"What, I'm not enough?"
"Well yeah, but presents make it better."
"Pesents!" Claire enthuses. "Hmmm, well mommy's gonna tell me how you girls behaved while I was gone and if you were good, there might be something for you when we get home."
Hunter reaches under the table and takes your hand. It's sticky. You pull your hand back in surprise.
"Oh, sorry, syrup I guess." He looks at the girl's breakfast.
"It's fine, here." You pull out a package of wet wipes and hand him one.
"When did you become one of those people who carries wet wipes in your purse?"
"Well remember that day you told me I was a mommy? I think that was the day."
He laughs and the girls join in, although they have no clue what you are talking about.

You smile softly and watch the girls trying to get their dad's attention. "Daddy!" Claire says poking his cheek."That's right baby, daddy's going to stay home with his girls for a while." Hunter grins widely at them.
You smile, knowing soon enough he'll be in his music room with the girls on his heels. That's how Elizabeth started to play her first instrument, the guitar. Hunter loved taking her to the studio with him to show off her skills. Claire however, since she was younger, got to have the softer side that came with being a baby. Him sitting on the floor, her between his legs as he plays and sings with her, kissing her hands. He makes it seem so peaceful.
Then there was the time of the night where he had you. That soft side out again with him kissing your shoulder and neck, holding you close to him, it was so relaxing. You loved having time with him.

As you wait for Hunter to finish brushing his teeth you read the latest journal that Hunter kept for you while he was on the road. Your eyes fill each time Hunter mentions you or the girls, which is every day."Enjoying your light reading?" He asks, leaning against the bed and taking off his socks.
"Very much so, best yet."
He crawls into bed and leans over you.
"But don't leave us again, for a long time."
Hunter kisses you deeply. You close your eyes and sigh.
"Turn off the light." Hunter urges, kissing your neck.
As you reach over to switch off the lamp a little voice calls "mommy, daddy?" You look at the door and it eeks open.
"I had a bad dream." Elizabeth mumbles, sleepily stumbling into the room.
"Aww, sweetie, come over here and tell daddy all about it." Hunter holds out his arms and she runs into them, crying.
"Shh, it's alright sweetie." He strokes her hair and looks at you with soft eyes.
"Can I sleep with you?"
"Of course baby." You pull back the covers and she climbs up into bed.
Hunter lays down and you reach over to turn off the light.
"Love you." Hunter says, smiling at you.
"I love you too." The light goes off and the two warm bodies snuggle closer to you as you drift off to sleep.
