Chapter Forty-Nine

"Where's Shiho?" Mikey asks. Sanzu raises a brow at him.

"She didn't come and find you?" Sanzu asks.

"So she's back?"

"She got back a while ago. She refused to say anything other than 'get the fuck away from me'," he says. Mikey's expression falls flat.

What happened?

"Is she in her office?" Mikey asks.

"Yessir. No one has seen her leave."

"No one disturbs us. You handle anything that comes up on your own, am I clear?"

"Yessir."

Mikey turns away and walks into Shiho's office. It's not too far from his own. It's not too far from their rooms on the top floor of the building either. It's no more than one hundred paces from the elevator. Even then, they use their room as more of an office anyway. They go to their own offices when they really wanted to be alone. And Mikey knows that, but he had a bad feeling earlier.

"Hey, Shiho? Are you okay in there?"

"Jirou...?"

"I'm coming in."

"W—wait!" Mikey had already opened the door though.

"Shiho, what happened?" Mikey asks. He sits down next to her. She's leaning against the arm of the couch, facing the other direction. "Something happened on the mission, right?"

"Yeah."

"So tell me."

"I fucked up, Jirou. And—and I don't do that! And it wasn't a minor mistake this time. I—I didn't mean to hurt him—he just jumped in front of her—"

"Shiho." Shiho looks over at him. Her eyes are red and puffy. "What happened?"

"When I went to kill Senju, Ken~Chan and Micchi were there. They had been ambushed by some kids from Rokuhara Tandai, but it didn't seem like they were on South's orders. I got rid of them. Senju, Ken~Chan, and Micchi fought back...and Ken~Chan jumped in front of Senju before I could kill her. I don't think he'll make it."

Mikey's eyes widen. He leans back a little. "I should have known that something like this would happen," he says. "I'm sorry, Shiho."

"No, you shouldn't be. I should have finished my job, but when I saw him there...I just couldn't. I'm still pretty soft for them, huh?"

Mikey looks at the ground. "I am too. Let's go."

"Why?"

"Because Rokuhara won't sit quietly. I'm sure South has heard. We're going back over there. The war starts today."

Shiho looks up at him, hardens her expression, and nods. "Right."

Takemichi had been scared when Rokuhara Tandai found them, but seeing Mikey and Shiho made all of that go away.

They both have on a white long jacket, not unlike the old Touman uniform. They're each on their own bike, staring out at the crowd with a sort of disgust. Mikey looks very similar to when he lead Touman. The only difference is the dullness in his eyes—just like how he looks in the future.

Shiho's hair is still short, but it's styled more like Senju's. Hers is just more curly—well, right now it's frizzy from the rain and wind from riding here, but it's normally curly. Her eyes are as dull as Mikey's. It's strange how she's here like she didn't kill Draken earlier. He knows she did it now.
