What's Expected

Like any place, Heaven had laws. And they were pretty strict, especially for those higher up in the hierarchy. Regular citizens didn't need to concern themselves with much. As for the greater angels, they were expected to protect and serve God without question. Their training was grueling and lasted hours every day. Nobody knew what this training entailed until they were chosen or enlisted into the regime. And once they were in, it was too late. There was no going back. God didn't allow anyone to leave. Many died during training. Of course, their family and friends were lied to. They were told that it had been from injuries or some tragic accident – the usual stories. The "I'm sorry for your loss" speech was reused and recycled countless times. And everyone bought it. Being one of God's chosen few was a great honor. But nobody knew the truth. It was a brutal ordeal with little rewards waiting in the end. The greater angels rarely left the castle and had few visiting hours and vacation time. If any. They were expected to forsake everything and forget all those they cared about. God couldn't have pawns with strings attached. And if some had lines, they would be severed without hesitation. It was all to ensure the army of pawns was unquestionably loyal to the king and nobody else. The only strings allowed were the ones that God tied around everyone's throats. He pulled them as he pleased. It was pretty entertaining.
