We ran through the cold grey stone corridors of the maze. Newt ran beside me, I could see that he was in pain but he said nothing.
"Keep it up, guys, we're almost there!" Thomas yelled from the front of the group.
We ran through the strange metal things and slowed down as the group stopped. We moved to the front of the group and watched Thomas stick his head around the corner and quickly move back.
"Is it a Griever?" Chuck asked, fear edging his voice.
"Yeah," Thomas replied and Minho swore.
"You take this, Chuck. Stay behind us," Thomas instructed as he handed the young boy the key.
"It's okay. Just stick with me," Teresa placed her hand on his shoulder. Newt turned to me.
"Y/n, stay with them," Newt asked me softly.
"I can fight, plus the Grievers won't attack me," I protested but he silenced me with a finger on my lips
"Exactly, we need our best fighter to be protecting the key," Newt reasoned. I sighed and gave in, there was no time for arguing.
"Kiss me," I said softly and he obliged. He kissed me hard and pulled me close, some of the other boys muttered quietly but we didn't break apart until we desperately needed air.
"Okay so, once we're through, the key will activate and the door will open. We stay close, stick together and we'll get through this. We get out now, or we die trying. Ready?" He scanned the group, checking that everyone was as ready as they could be. My hand found Newt's to hold for several precious seconds.
"All right. Let's go!" Thomas shouted and the group ran around the corner and towards the Griever. The Griever bounded towards us and the boys stabbed it with the long sharpened poles and tried to push it off the edge. The Griever seemed to get the upper hand and whipped its tail, forcing the boys to duck. One of the boys was grabbed and hurled off the edge. I tried to keep my eyes on Newt. The Griever moved its legs forward to steady itself and Teresa sliced at it with a machete. The leg hit Chuck and the key was thrown out of his hand.
"The key!" He yelled and rushed after it as it bounced and rolled towards the edge.
"Chuck!" Teresa shouted after him, "Watch the edge!"
He ignored her and practically threw himself to the ground to catch it. He dangled precariously over the edge before Teresa and I grabbed him.
"Pull me up! Pull me up!" He cried. I saw a Griever climbing up the wall and together we pulled Chuck up. I heard a cheer from the boys and saw that they've managed to push the other Griever over the edge. I saw another Griever pull itself up on the other edge and we sprinted back towards the group.
"There's more coming!" Chuck yelled to them.
The boys instantly lunged and battled the Grievers and I snatched Teresa's machete to help them, I sliced it at one of the legs and we all ducked the sweep of a tail. Newt shoved me back but I ignored him and continued trying to help them. Teresa managed to get the first door to unlock and it slid up.
"It works!" Chuck yelled.
"Teresa go," Thomas yelled.
"Stay together!" Someone else yelled.
My body ached but I ignored it and continued fighting.
"There's gotta be a way out, come on!" Teresa yelled and tried to get it to open.
"It won't open!" Chuck yelled but then a red projection appeared, displaying numbers.
"Thomas! There's a code! Eight numbers!" Teresa yelled to Thomas.
