Warnings: violence, fighting, descriptions of blood and death
Newt's POV
Red fog surged towards us, covering the entire battlefield. The ground changed, appearing more solid, yet I couldn't feet it. Bloody patches grew, welling up from the earth. Bones, bloody and white, littered the rocky ground.
"Get out of my head!" screamed a woman in the distance.
The Phoenix.
What followed was a chilling laugh that crept from the dark crevices all around us. The sound distorted and the pitch dropped to something more sinister.
In the distance, people began to scream.
A dark blur whooshed past us, startling us into pointing our useless guns after it. The fog swallowed it whole, limiting our vision. Fire lit up in the distance, rising high in the sky. The fog burned orange with it. Heat stung my cheeks.
"What the hell is that?" Tommy breathed.
"Y/n, surely?" Brenda replied, pressing her hand against a cut across her arm. "Illusions."
Out of the dark flew several dark objects. They all hit the ground with sickening thuds and snaps. Blank eyes stared faintly in our direction. Soliders. All dead, their limbs broken and bent in unnatural ways.
Someone whimpered.
"We need to go," Y/n gasped, appearing out of nowhere and scaring us all half to death. Blood poured down the side of her head, thick in her hair and on her skin. Her hands, her entire body was flecked with splatters and splashes of it. "Not long until they turn on us."
"Who turns on us?" I demanded as we started to run. "And what about Ember and Jorge?"
"They'll catch up!"
The blur of shadow swirled around us in a spiral before unleashing a deafening shriek and moving on. We all stopped to watch.
Y/n stared after it with wide eyes. "Out of curiousity, who the hell do you think that is?"
"You? Illusions?"
"Wrong. C'mon, be smart for once." Y/n forced us to keep moving, herding us along while she limped and winced with every step. "That, you fools, is the worst possible being you want to come across. The actual monster of our story. Wicked's only the secondary villains."
Brenda made an impatient sound, scanning behind us. "What the hell are you on about?"
We passed mutilated bodies torn open and apart and scattered on the dirt. Nausea rose up in my throat at the sight. That was quickly joined by fear when a figure clouded in darkness broke the bloody fog.
"Hello, darlings," called the indistinguishable voice. Nothing about them could be discerned. "Y/n, I can't see a thing in this fog. Be a dear and control yourself. Bury that useless grief."
Y/n's eyes narrowed, but the illusion faded.
To reveal the Phoenix.
"Y/n!" she screamed, catching sight of us.
"Back off!" Y/n warned in return, lightning zapping off her hands. "Let us go or I swear everyone in that damn building will die."
The Phoenix teleported closer, flicking her glance between us and the being. "I don't believe you."
"Oh, c'mon. Don't give me any of that. You saw everything. You know exactly who I am," Y/n spat, her eyes alive with her fury. "Let us go."
With a shake of her head, she shot a fireball at us.
