Y/n's POV

Three days later

Faded green signs with flaking letters directed us deeper into Mexico. I leaned against the window, a blanket between my skin and the glass. Dead bushes and trees lined the side of the road. Their spindly brown and ash-grey limbs reminded me of bony Crank arms. Nothing lived out here, nothing could. The heat and the few Cranks killed anything trying to. It was so hot. Without the air conditioner, we would have cooked alive in the car.

"There's a Wicked facility up ahead somewhere, wanna pay them a visit?" Nikolai asked, breaking my train of thought.

I smirked at him and nodded, I caught Aaliyah's eyes in the mirror and I gave her a wink. She was very quiet, she had only spoken one word to me.

Nikolai pulled off the road a few moments later, stopping the car. I hopped out, stretching my arms high over my head before I opened Aaliyah's door. She winced as her bare feet hit the scalding sand and I scooped her up. It was easy since she was tiny and all bone.

Nik led us up to a ridge and we stared down at the Wicked facility below. The cliff easily overlooked the entire surrounding area. Blinding golden desert stretched as far as the eye could see, near glowing from the merciless sun glaring down at us.

A helicopter landed as we watched. Men smaller than ants darted back and forth, carrying boxes into the building. The building itself was much like the one we had last seen: all concrete and metal. A fence surrounded this one, though even from here it appeared flimsy. Several tall watchtowers were stationed along the building with the purpose of killing Cranks.

"Should we go in and destroy it or like a stealth mission. I kinda wanna go in through the front door for the drama," I said, squinting at the building. There was one large metal front door. Hardly a challenge.

Nikolai snorted, reaching up to brush some sand from Aaliyah's head. "What if there's either of those two?"

"I can handle them," I insisted, shifting the kid. "I doubt they'll be here in the middle of nowhere."

"Sure." Nikolai rolled his eyes, not appreciating or finding comfort in my confidence. "It's not worth the risk."

"Okay, new plan: I distract them and you get supplies."

"We should check to see if there's any prisoners too," Nikolai suggested, tugging his hood up to shield him from the sun.

"Okay, so you do all that and I'll put on a show," I decided. I looked at Aaliyah. "Are you happy to wait in the car?" She nodded.

"It's settled then, I'll take Aaliyah back to the car. Get walking, you should go in through the back or side of the building."

Nikolai hugged me quickly, pressing a kiss to my temple. "Be safe, don't do anything stupid."

"When have I ever done that?" I teased, enjoying the exasperation that followed.

I took Aaliyah back to the car and turned on the air conditioner for her. Aaliyah climbed into the backseat and I shut the door and locked it. I winked at her before weaving a simple illusion over the car to hide it from eyes.

My plan was to go straight across the desert and make sure to catch Wicked's full attention. Once I reached where I decided to be a good spot, I closed my eyes and called a storm fueled by illusions. The sky instantly darkened, the sunlight blocked by thick black clouds. Lightning flashed between them, I snapped my fingers making the air wrap around me and lift me up. Fog settled slightly around the building, seeping up through the same. A laugh sliced through the thunder, part of the illusion.
